Meet Nkiruka, the ultimate party animal. With her irresistible charm and infectious energy, she was always the center of attention.
At parties, Nkiruka danced on tables, told outrageous stories, and made everyone laugh. Her friends admired her carefree spirit, but some felt overshadowed.
Rebecca and Magdalene, her friends since college, grew increasingly resentful towards her. They have always been the life of the party, but Nkiruka's arrival stole the spotlight.
It was a cool evening, and everywhere was calm and quiet. Nkiruka was just coming back from her choir rehearsal when she overheard Rebecca and Magdalene talking about her in a condescending manner. She paused to make sure she was not hearing things.
She couldn't believe that Rebecca, whom she has trusted so much, harbored such a grudge against her. She never knew that what she took as a joke was no joke to them. When she got home, she sat quietly on the balcony, her anger evident on her face. She was soliloquizing to herself about what she had just overheard about herself from her friends.
She couldn't believe that all the rubbish and all the unprinted names she heard were for her. She has always been a carefree person and the life of the party; she makes sure to always carry her friends along. She sometimes has to shrink herself inside so her friends could fit in, especially whenever she feels like she is getting too much attention compared to her friends.
She stood up from the chair she was sitting on in the balcony, thinking if she should confront them or ignore them instead, but the constant echoing of their voices reminded her the pain nudging in her heart.
One night, Nkiruka couldn't endure the anger growing in her heart. She confronted them, accusing them of speaking ill of her behind her back. She told them everything they had said about her in church. Rebecca didn't need to pretend anymore, so she accused her of stealing the show and always acting like she is more jovial and open-minded than they are.
Nkiruka was taken aback, but she listened as Rebecca confessed her grievances towards her. Nkiruka was so upset she told Rebecca that if she felt this way about her, why didn't she at least try to tell her or even bring it to her attention that she is doing too much instead of talking behind her back.
She turned to Magdalene and asked her what her own anger towards her was. At first, Magdalene didn't want to say anything, but Nkiruka wasn't about to let her off the hook. 'You better start talking right now before I lose my temper more than this.' Other friends around tried to calm her down, but she refused.
She walked up to Magdalene, dragged her up from her seat, and asked her to speak immediately. Magdalene looked up, her eyes welled up with tears, as she shared her own insecurities and vulnerabilities, revealing a more nuanced side. By the time Magdalene was done talking, Nkiruka sunk onto the sofa.
She held her head with her hands, suddenly stood up, and looked from one friend to another, trying to fight the tears threatening to fall. 'Is there anyone here who has something else to say before I say what is on my mind?'
Some people began to tell her what she did last time that made everybody angry. Although they had forgiven her, she should try to consider others' feelings when doing certain things. One told her that flirting with Jamie, who was Rebecca's crush, was totally wrong, especially when she knew how Rebecca felt about the guy and how the guy felt about her.
Another told her that dancing with the guys wasn't the problem, but kissing him in front of Rebecca was really provoking. Nkiruka retorted that she was drunk and didn't remember doing those things and asked why Rebecca didn't confront her after her hangover.
Her other friends filled her in on the things she had been doing wrong all this time and how they had tried to bring it to her notice but to no avail. Nkiruka realized her mistakes and how she had crossed boundaries out of her carefree life.
She opened up and shared her insecurities and vulnerabilities with her friends. Everywhere was quiet for about three minutes; nobody said a word to each other.Nkiruka's vulnerability disarmed Rebecca and Magdalene, and they began to see Nkiruka in a new light.
They made amends, and their friendship deepened. Rebecca and Magdalene learned to appreciate Nkiruka's unique qualities and found ways to shine alongside her.Their friendship flourished, proving that there's room for everyone to sparkle.
