Succulents outdoors: esperimenti al limite

 Due anni fa circa ho iniziato a piantumare sopra i gabbioni della casa, erano stati messi tanto tempo fa dal comune in seguito a una frana che fece crollare parte di strada e del terreno di casa. Sono sempre rimasti spogli, ricoperti da sola ghiaia nella parte soprastante dove poco a poco piante pioniere come ginestre, rovi, ma anche erbacee come il Geranium robertianum avevano preso il sopravvento dando un'aria di incuria. --- About two years ago I started planting above the gabions of the house, they had been put there a long time ago by the municipality following a landslide that caused part of the road and the house ground to collapse. They have always remained bare, covered only by gravel in the upper part where little by little pioneer plants such as broom, brambles, but also herbaceous plants such as Geranium robertianum had taken over giving an air of neglect.     Ho quindi pensato di sfruttare il terreno ghiaioso e veramente molto drenante per fare un'aiuola di piante grasse che riescono a resistere all'esterno anche con temperature sotto zero. Le prime che ho messo sono state delle Agavi, le tenevo in serra ed occupavano molto spazio, ero un po' scettico su quello che stavo facendo perché l 'inverno qui in montagna è molto freddo e soprattutto molto umido e piovoso. Contrariamente a quanto si pensa infatti non è tanto il freddo che fa marcire le succulente ma proprio l'alto tasso di umidità invernale e l'acqua piovana che al minimo ristagno fa disastri. --- So I thought of taking advantage of the gravelly and very draining soil to make a flowerbed of succulents that can survive outside even at temperatures below zero. The first ones I planted were some Agaves, I kept them in the greenhouse and they took up a lot of space, I was a bit skeptical about what I was doing because the winter here in the mountains is very cold and above all very humid and rainy. Contrary to popular belief, in fact, it is not so much the cold that makes succulents rot but rather the high level of winter humidity and the rainwater that at the slightest stagnation causes disasters.  Dopo due anni invece sono veramente contento di come stanno andando le cose perché nonostante ho trascurato molto questa parte di casa essendo di difficile accesso ed anche abbastanza pericolosa perché posso cadere, un buon 80/90% delle piante che ho messo sono ancora vive. --- After two years, however, I am really happy with how things are going because even though I have neglected this part of the house a lot because it is difficult to access and also quite dangerous because I can fall, a good 80/90% of the plants I put in are still alive. Agave americana    Agave geminiflora   Questo è stato per me un esperimento un po' al limite, sia per la sopravvivenza delle piante ma anche per un fatto economico, molte piante che ho messo hanno un certo valore come quest'Aloe polyphylla, donata da un'amico e quindi anche un valore affettivo. Pianta eccezionale che darà tutta la sua bellezza quando sarà più grande, le foglie formano una spirale aurea veramente affascinante. --- This was for me a somewhat extreme experiment, both for the survival of the plants but also for an economic fact, many plants that I have planted have a certain value like this Aloe polyphylla, donated by a friend and therefore also an emotional value. Exceptional plant that will give all its beauty when it is bigger, the leaves form a truly fascinating golden spiral. Aloe polyphylla    Le Scilla peruviana sono quelle che hanno gestito la situazione meglio, sono sempreverdi e non hanno un minimo accenno di foglie cotte dal freddo, anzi, sembrano gradire. Vi mostrerò le loro fioriture dai colori bellissimi fra poco, con l inizio della pirmavera. --- The Scilla peruviana are the ones that have handled the situation best, they are evergreen and do not have a hint of leaves cooked by the cold, in fact, they seem to like it. I will show you their blooms with beautiful colors soon, with the beginning of spring.  Ho messo molte Opuntie anche, adesso sto cercando qualche specie che rissta al freddo e che faccia i frutti commestibili, cosi da propagarle e inserirle nel progetto di autosufficienza alimentare in montagna. --- I have also planted many Opuntias, now I am looking for some species that can withstand the cold and that produce edible fruits, so as to propagate them and include them in the food self-sufficiency project in the mountains. Opuntia microdasys rufida indigo  Molti Echinopsis e Trichocereus nonostante hanno preso una bella botta dal freddo e dal caldo sono ancora qui, puntavo molto su di loro perché è una collezione di ibridi dai fiori veramente belli e grandi. Non sono molto preoccupato perché le poche piante che sono marcite erano dapprima eccessivamente pompate, cariche di azoto con i tessuti dilatati dall'acqua e quindi più soggette a marciumi e poi fanno tantissimi polloni nuovi che escono già ambientati, quindi anche se non appaiono al massimo della salute, credo che nei prossimi anni andranno meglio. --- Many Echinopsis and Trichocereus despite having taken a good beating from the cold and heat are still here, I was banking a lot on them because it is a collection of hybrids with really beautiful and large flowers. I am not very worried because the few plants that have rotted were initially excessively pumped, loaded with nitrogen with tissues dilated by the water and therefore more subject to rot and then they make lots of new suckers that come out already acclimatized, so even if they do not appear to be in top health, I believe that in the next few years they will do better.    Iris sedum e sempervivum li ho messi un pò dappertutto, sia per tappare buchi che per dar colore con fogliame e fiori. Sono tutte piante estremamente resistenti al freddo e alla siccità, credo che ben presto queste piante prenderanno il sopravvento su tutto e sarà uno spettacolo a primavera. --- Iris sedum and sempervivum I put them everywhere, both to plug holes and to give color with foliage and flowers. They are all plants extremely resistant to cold and drought, I think that soon these plants will take over everything and it will be a show in spring.
