Hello everyone, welcome to my blog. I am especially using this time out to wish everyone a happy new month.
It's the first edition of this week's Hive Learners weekly engagement writing prompts with the topic Democracy
Democracy, or the democratic system of government, is about the most popular system of government in the world today, with over half of the world's countries practicing it.
It is a system of government of the people, for the people, and by the people, a system of government where people have the legal rights to elect their leaders based on some laid-down specifications.
Particularly in my country, you are allowed to exercise your civic right as a citizen by voting during elections once you are 18 years of age.
There are several other systems of government, but the democratic system of government seems to have won the majority of the world leadership system.
From my research I found There are a few key points that form the foundation of a democratic system of government; without these factors, a country's democratic system might be questionable.
Foundation of the democratic system
-
Rule of law, which means that no one is above the laws of the society, no matter their position.
-
Freedom to vote in my country: Once a person turns 18 years old, they have the liberty to apply for a voter's card, which makes them eligible to vote in the next election.
-
Division of power We have the executive, the legislative, and the judiciary arms of government with different responsibilities.
-
Accountability: Here the government is accountable to the people that voted them into power.
-
Protection of citizens' rights, which means the government has an obligation to protect public opinion of the masses.
These are the basic keys upon which the democratic system of government thrives; however, there are some loopholes in so many systems of the world today.
Challenges of Democracy
We sometimes see politicians paying people to be voted into power, after which they use the office to increase their wealth, leaving the people who voted them impoverished. Well, what do you expect when someone buys power anyways?
Corruption and leadership malpractices are also a major challenge in a democratic system of government, as some leaders, once elected, take the opportunity to divert projects meant for other regions to their own geopolitical regions.
Hope for Democracy
In the end everything that has an advantage also has some form of disadvantage because they say one man's food could be another man's poison.
The interesting thing is every government that has a beginning has an end, and when a leader is found wanting, they could be impeached, which is one of the greatest advantages in this system of government because the leaders don't have the ultimate power.
Well, the democratic system of government, for me, is about the most reliable system of government because it gives room for economic growth and freedom of speech, which allows people to be able to critique the government and make suggestions.
So in spite of the challenges in this state of government, it is a reliable system because one thing is constant: change, and this gives you and me a chance to make a change.
Thanks for stopping by.
