Mira and the river's test

After the heavy rains, the river had become unrestrained. Broken branches drifted downstream like quiet travelers, and trees collapsed from the weight of water flowing past their roots. Mira the tortoise sat on one of these logs with his claws gripping tightly as the river moved him out into open seas.

He wasn't scared at first, Tortoises are masters at waiting out situations. However, an anxiety grew in his chest as the forest vanished behind him and the waters expanded into what appeared to be an endless lake. He could barely see the land in the distance ahead, a shoreline sparkling in the sunlight. He could see it, but it was too far away to swim.

Back in the forest, Mira recalled other storms he had encountered. He would merely crawl beneath leaves until the calm returned when winds ripped down branches. He had a habit of being patient, which had always been his shield. However, it felt completely different and more uncertain to be patient on moving waters.

“Great,” Mira muttered to himself. “Stranded on a floating stick with a shore I cannot reach. What now?”

The waves rocked him gently at first but became more forceful as they moved onto the sea. As the birds chattered in the sky, none of them paused to assist. A fish jumped nearby, pouring water across his shell, and vanished again. Everyone around seemed to enjoy their space except for him.

Mira wished for a moment that another creature would float with him, if only to be silent with him. He recalled the slow companionship of snails on calm evenings or the chatting of rabbits by the riverbank. He felt like the only one being left in the massive body of water.

As time went by, the log rotated slowly in circles. Mira's tummy started to rumble, and his claws hurt from gripping. His plan was to allow the waves to carry him to whatever destination fate brings. Then he noticed something. The log moved in a different direction every time he lowered a leg into the water. He froze immediately, could it be that simple?

Mira paused, wondering whether the change was a dream. A lone tortoise felt ridiculously little against the powerful torrent of the river. He had persistent doubt, what if he had wasted his strength? Doing nothing had started to feel heavier than the waves themselves, yet an element of curiosity pushed him to try again.

He tried again, dipping his leg in the water. With one sharp kick, the log shifted a little to the right. He gave it another shove, this time with his right leg, it adjusted back to the left and a little bit forward. Then a flash of purpose sparked within him.

From then on, he used his legs to steer the log, moving with the river instead of just sitting tight. He leaned with the waves as they rose, and pushed harder as they fell silent. The distant coastline drew closer and closer, it was slow but progressive.

Mira considered giving up a few times. Every time he slowed, the waves drove him back, and his claws hurt like they could break. A stronger river once tossed the log around, making him drained and unable to wait. However, each time he glanced up and saw the gleaming coastline, his legs found a new kick of determination.

The orange lines in the sky above had turned to purple as the day was turning to night. The waves sounded like whispers as the air became colder and brushed against his shell. He wondered whether nightfall would arrive before the land would accept  his claws.

By evening, after what felt like endless effort, the log finally scraped onto the soft sand. Mira dragged himself down onto the beach and lay there for a moment, allowing the ground to help him recover his strength and balance. The seas continued to flow behind him, sending more logs to mystery locations.

Mira neither grumbled nor bragged. "Looking back at the waves, he thought, The river can push you anywhere, but it doesn’t choose where you stop. "That is your responsibility." Then he vanished into the woods, leaving his tale to be spoken by the waves.
