When I finish a roll of 35mm film it gets thrown into the celluloid blackhole which is a large box of exposed film that lives in my closet. What secrets of my past does it hold? I have selective memory when it comes to photography, and fail to remember shots, moments, times. I'm sure it happens to the best of us. I don't remember this cheeky Swan, but her he/ she is all up in my grill.
And here, we have a location. This is Linlithgow Loch. It is here (not in the Loch) that me and my ex-partner welcomed baby Oban into the world, so I can perhaps date this roll to around 2017/18. He was born in November so perhaps Spring 18 is a more accurate date. Not that it matters to you haha. You are here to appreciate the dynamic range and beauty of Kodak Portra 400.
Ahhhh, yes. A self portrait of me and the bambino. This is Scotland, this is the art mounds at Jupiter Artland and my attire confirms we are at the very least in Spring. Shorts don't exist in Scottish Winter, they are folklore. The colours of 35mm are so good but lets just appreciate for a moment the lack of distortion you get with film cameras. Its just glorious.
Some beautiful Hebridean sheep with Linlithgow Palace in the backdrop. I think this image again demonstrates the dynamic range available when working with film. You would struggle to see such detail on the brown sheep with digital, and remember this image is straight out of the camera, no editing whatsoever and the shadows are as clear as day.
35mm handles harsh sunlight like Kamara Usman handled Jorge in their second bout. Knocked it out of the park and into another realm of detail.
Well, again, I hope you enjoyed these images and they inspire you to put your digital demons back in the drawer for just one more day. If not, it doesn't really matter, just go do something and live.
