So, it happened that I went house hunting earlier this year, around March. See, I have watched house-hunting videos online, read tweets and all, but I had the firsthand experience myself and reality dawned on me. I went through so much and I still couldn’t get an apartment at the end of it all. Before I returned home from school, I had a different perception of my city. I thought rent was still reasonable and that it was easy for a young person to start their life there. I didn’t plan on staying home for long, but ever since I got to know the reality of what things have become, I am forced to stay here until I am actually able to have enough to start my own life. Guys, I was searching for a room self-contain and my budget was 500,000 naira and guess what? I couldn’t find a reasonable apartment at that price, especially in the location I preferred. I remember my agent showing me an apartment then for slightly above my 500k budget. It had the kitchen detached from the room, and the room looked renovated, but it was obvious that they just struggled to remove the toilet and bathroom from it. It was weird for me to settle for that kind of arrangement and still move out of my budget. Also, there are these crazy fees attached to rent that just automatically put it on the high side. Service charge, this and that charge, and all this is after you have paid numerous inspection fees to agents. That inspection fee thing is just so ridiculous to me. You have a product you feel I might be interested in, but I need to pay you just to be able to see it. How does that even make any logical sense? House hunting is not for the faint-hearted, for real. You have to be ready mentally, physically, emotionally, and financially. It can be a whole lot, and some of those agents lie a lot. ![1000520297.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/creativepearl/EoEii7Wnvc7k45Ni8QR1Bx72adHBaF9x35EexnWC7fFH2aBEkEWteSLXDquGfRnmbSM.jpg)[source](https://unsplash.com/photos/red-and-black-ride-on-toy-car-Hl1eeC7D-Mk?utm_content=creditShareLink&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash) Also, they are mostly the reason rent is super expensive. Rent will be like 300k and the total package will be almost close to 600k—how?? There is no regulation at all in this real estate thing in my city and everybody just does as they like. It’s literally so hard for a young person to start their life without spending a fortune first. How then do we want to grow when rent is already taking a big chunk of one’s earnings? I would have started hoping that things would get better and all, but I know better than to waste my time on that. I just hope that through it all, things keep getting better for us and we don’t feel the heat too much. Rent is not the way it used to be, everywhere in the country. Everyone is lamenting and complaining. If you are lucky enough to find an apartment swiftly without issues. Just count yourself as one of the luckiest people ever. And also if you are able to afford it, may God keep providing for you. I am currently saving up again for my apartment and I do hope it just comes with so much ease, I do not have so much energy left it in me. Thanks for reading ♥️
