To watch the same old romantic comedies, psychological thrillers with predictable plot twists, or family melodramas based on true events, we have Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max. But to watch different, riskier films with a different, controversial, and necessary perspective that delves into the most uncomfortable aspects of our humanity, we have platforms like MUBI or Filmin.

It was on MUBI that I saw _**Pleasure**_, a Swedish film directed by Ninja Thyberg and written by her with Peter Modestij. The film stars Sofia Kappel and tells the story of Linnéa, a nineteen-year-old Swedish girl who leaves her life in a small town in her country to move to Los Angeles and become a porn star. There she calls herself Bella Cherry and tells a few people that the reason she's decided to do this is because she enjoys sex, and if she can get money and fame in return, all the better. Now, the story of the small-town Cinderella who makes it to the big city and becomes a star is one we've seen a thousand times with actresses, singers, designers, athletes, and other professionals; and in the vast majority of those stories, there are some obstacles, rivals, and challenges, but there's also the pursuit of a noble goal: to be the best actress, the best singer, and so on. However, Pleasure changes that narrative a bit. First, because pornography, sex, and pleasure remain taboo subjects in many societies and, as such, condemned by public opinion. For many people, being a porn star, having an Only Fans account, or being a webcam model is practically another way of prostituting oneself. That's why Bella Cherry isn't a heroine like Esther Hoffman (Barbra Streisand in _A Star is Born_) but a rebellious, crazy young woman, one no mother would hold up as an example to her daughters. But behind that dream, behind that stage name, lies Linnéa, a human being with doubts, emotions, nostalgia, desires, fears, joys and sorrows.

Allí se hace llamar Bella Cherry y dice a algunas personas que la razón por la que ha decidido hacer eso es porque disfruta el sexo y si puede obtener dinero y fama a cambio, mejor. Ahora bien, la historia de la cenicienta de pueblo que llega a la gran ciudad y se convierte en una estrella la hemos visto mil veces con actrices, cantantes, diseñadoras, deportistas y otras profesiones; y en la gran mayoría de esas historias hay algunos obstáculos, rivales y desafíos, pero existe la persecución de una meta noble que es ser la mejor actriz, la mejor cantante, etcétera. Sin embargo, _**Pleasure**_ cambia un poco ese discurso. Primero porque la pornografía, el sexo y el placer siguen siendo temas tabú en muchas sociedades y como tales condenados por la opinión pública. Para muchas personas ser estrella porno, tener una cuenta de Only Fans o ser modelo webcam es prácticamente otra manera de prostituirse. Por eso Bella Cherry no es una heroína como Esther Hoffman (Barbra Streisand en _A Star is Born_) sino una joven rebelde, alocada, que ninguna madre pondría como ejemplo para sus hijas. Pero detrás de ese sueño, detrás de ese nombre artístico, sigue Linnéa, un ser humano con dudas, emociones, nostalgias, deseos, miedos, alegrías y tristezas.

Obviously, it's almost impossible to tell the story of a porn star without showing explicit scenes, so yes, there are some pretty graphic scenes. However, _**Pleasure**_ doesn't focus so much on filming and showing Bella Cherry's work, but rather on the underlying themes, the industry and production behind the scenes, things that consumers of that type of content don't think about. Making porn isn't about going into a room and filming yourself having sex with someone. It's much more complex than that.

Although she was initially motivated by pleasure, Bella takes it seriously. After all, it's a job in a highly competitive industry; therefore, if she wants to become the best, she must work with the best and be willing to do what no one (or almost no one) can do. At first it seems _easy_ because Linnéa is convinced she can do it; however, some of these options are very _hardcore_ things, and soon she is assailed by doubts and fears. Was it all a mistake? Should she return to Sweden? Was she wrong to want to be a porn star? The girl meets many people, but deep down she's alone. It's her and her dream against the world, and that struggle shakes the viewer's morality. Those who watch Linnéa's story on screen, do they want her to succeed so she can achieve her goal? Or do they prefer her to fail so she can decide to lead a quieter life later? Based on these and other questions, _**Pleasure**_ reflects on the price of pleasure, the pursuit of fame, appearances, hedonism, fetishes, youth, femininity, the relationship between the person and their body, freedom, individuality, psychological strength, the business of sex, of pornography. Is that a job, a career? Should porn stars and sex workers have labor rights?

I think the fact that the director is a woman helps when it comes to talking about a clearly misogynistic environment without focusing too much on showing sex on screen, but rather precisely what's behind it all. Having sex with a person, remembering lines from a script, with cameras and cameramen present, or having to film a scene with a person you hate, someone you just met... I think most people aren't aware of the mental strength it takes to be able to dedicate yourself to this _profession_.

In addition to the courage to tell this story in the most honest and realistic way possible, I applaud the director's decision to hire real porn actors and actresses for several of the supporting roles. Who better than people who work in that field to portray that universe with greater believability? Even Mark Spiegler's character, the talent agent who propels the actresses' careers to stardom, is none other than Spiegler playing himself. _**Pleasure**_ isn't a fairy tale with a happy ending; it's a reflection on labor exploitation, how deceptive appearances can be, and the sex market in a superficially moralistic but deeply corrupt society that is nonetheless both attractive and repulsive. Ninja Thyberg's feature debut, based on a short film she shot herself a decade earlier, is also Sofia Kappel's debut, portraying an ambitious, confused, and mysterious young woman. Throughout the film, one manages to empathize with Bella Cherry, feel sorry for Linnéa, reject her, understand her a little, and defend her, but there's always something missing, something the viewer can't truly grasp because Linnéa's relationship with pleasure isn't always clear. *Red Rocket*, *Antiporno*, *Boogie Nights*, *Lovelace*, *About Cherry* are some other films that deal with the subject of the pornography industry. I haven't seen any of them, but _**Pleasure**_ has managed to break down certain prejudices I may have had in the past, and for that reason alone, and for bringing a taboo subject to the table, I think it's worth seeing. El primer largometraje de Ninja Thyberg, basado en un cortometraje filmado por ella misma una década antes, es también el primer papel de Sofia Kappel quien ha conseguido encarnar a una joven ambiciosa, confundida y también misteriosa. A lo largo de la película uno logra empatizar con Bella Cherry, sentir pena por Linnéa, rechazarla, comprenderla un poco, defenderla, pero siempre hay algo que se escapa, que el espectador no puede realmente asir porque la relación de Linnéa con el placer no siempre queda clara. _Red Rocket_, _Antiporno_, _Boogie Nights_, _Lovelace_, _About Cherry_, son algunas otras películas que tratan el tema de la industria pornográfica. No he visto ninguna, pero _**Pleasure**_ ha conseguido derribar ciertos prejuicios que pudiera haber tenido en el pasado y sólo por eso y por poner en la mesa un tema tabú, creo que vale la pena verla, ¿alguno de ustedes ha visto esta película? ¿la verían?
