Magic: The Gathering has crossed over with Final Fantasy, and even Hatsune Miku, but now the world’s most famous collectible card game is heading to Scranton. Wizards of the Coast has revealed a new Secret Lair drop featuring none other than Dwight Schrute from The Office, and I'm over it. However, the communities reactions range from bewildered laughter to pure dismay.
The “Dwight from The Office” Secret Lair is a six-card mini-set, part of Magic’s long running series of special releases that mix alternate art, pop culture crossovers, and tongue-in-cheek fun. Secret Lairs have hosted everything from Junji Ito’s haunting artwork to an entire Walking Dead set, but Dwight’s arrival may be the boldest and strangest yet.
Magic players are no strangers to pop culture mashups, but this drop seems to hit a new nerve or at least it does for me. Since the runaway success of 2020’s Walking Dead Secret Lair, Wizards of the Coast has leaned harder into playful and unexpected crossovers. While larger franchises like Final Fantasy get full scale expansions, Secret Lairs serve as a testing ground for quirky, limited run experiments whether that means Iron Maiden themed cards, Furby tributes, or now, a paper salesman turned turnip warrior. All I know is I think I'm sitting this one out.
