El viaje como tal fue el viernes 4 de julio, pero la publicación la he demorado hasta ahora para poder organizar las fotografías, ya que un gran por ciento de las que tomé resultaron inservibles 🥲 producto de la oscuridad y mi carencia de una buena cámara fotográfica.
Hello, #worldmappin community! Today, I want to share with you a wonderful real-life journey to one of the most impressive places in all of Cuba: Martín Infierno Cave. The trip itself took place on Friday, July 4th, but I delayed posting until now to organize the photos, as a large percentage of the ones I took turned out unusable 🥲 due to the darkness and my lack of a good camera.

1. Una necesaria introducción / A Necessary Introduction
La Cueva de Martín Infierno es notable ante todo por albergar la estalagmita más alta de las Américas (existe consenso en esto), y una de las contendientes por el puesto de la más alta del mundo. Aunque a decir verdad, en la materia de cuál es la estalagmita más alta del planeta parece no haber claridad y consenso a nivel internacional. Pero más allá de eso, existen toda una serie de valores naturales a su alrededor que hicieron de la expedición un viaje maravilloso.
Martín Infierno Cave is notable above all for housing the tallest stalagmite in the Americas (there is consensus on this) and one of the contenders for the tallest in the world. Though, to be honest, there doesn’t seem to be international clarity or consensus on which is the tallest stalagmite on the planet. But beyond that, there are a series of natural wonders around it that made the expedition a marvelous journey.
La cueva se encuentra en la costa sur de Cumanayagua, municipio cubano donde habito, aproximadamente a 60 kilómetros en total de mi casa, pero es en general desconocida. Hasta ahora la política de conservación ha sido muy estricta, pero esa situación está cambiando gracias a un Proyecto de Desarrollo Local que busca explotar turísticamente el atractivo con el objetivo final de protegerlo. Sé que esa afirmación es en apariencia contradictoria, así que para dilucidar la cuestión escribiré un post separado posteriormente.
The cave is located on the southern coast of Cumanayagua, the Cuban municipality where I live, approximately 60 kilometers from my house, yet it remains largely unknown. Until now, conservation policies have been very strict, but that is changing thanks to a Local Development Project aimed at promoting tourism to the site with the ultimate goal of protecting it. I know that statement may seem contradictory, so to clarify, I’ll write a separate post later.
2. La expedición / The Expedition
Todo comenzó con un viaje en autobús hasta el poblado costero Caleta Muñoz, luego siete kilómetros en tractor, y los últimos tres kilómetros a lomos de mulo.
It all began with a bus ride to the coastal village of Caleta Muñoz, followed by seven kilometers on a tractor, and the last three kilometers on muleback.

El tramo en autobús transcurrió sin interés, pero el tramo en tractor fue un poco más complicado, por el mal estado de los caminos, aún así, tuve tiempo para tomar algunas fotografías.
The bus ride was uneventful, but the tractor segment was a bit rougher due to the poor road conditions. Still, I had time to take some photos.
En el tramo del pueblo Caleta Muñoz a la cueva existen dos miradores con vistas geniales, por suerte pudimos hacer paradas para tomar fotos.
Between Caleta Muñoz and the cave, there are two lookout points with amazing views. Luckily, we made stops to take pictures.

Luego del tramo en tractor llegamos a un ranchón que forma parte de las instalaciones del proyecto. Este se erige sobre secaderos de café que por los datos con que contamos, deben tener una antiguedad ya cercana a los 100 años. A pesar de la edad, las varias plataformas escalonadas que componen el secadero son todavía incluso utilizables para su propósito original.
After the tractor ride, we arrived at a ranchón (open-sided shelter) that’s part of the project’s facilities. It stands atop old coffee-drying patios that, based on available records, are nearly 100 years old. Despite their age, the tiered platforms of the drying area are still usable for their original purpose.

A unos cien metros del ranchón se encuentra un establo, nuestra parada final antes de emprender el último tramo. A partir de esta locación, el terreno tiene partes escabrosas que dificultan el acceso a pie para la mayoría de las personas, por eso fue necesario recurrir a los mulos.
About a hundred meters from the ranchón is a stable, our last stop before the final leg of the journey. From this point onward, the terrain becomes rugged, making foot access difficult for most people, hence the need for mules.

Más adelante hay elevaciones desde las que se puede apreciar todo el valle que dejamos atrás, hasta la costa.
Further ahead, there are elevations from which you can see the entire valley behind us, all the way to the coast.

3. La cueva
Poco después dejamos los mulos en una elevación y comenzamos a descender hasta la cueva. El entramado de salones abiertos o semiabiertos, en combinación con las galerías le dan un aire majestuoso y tranquilo. A ratos el silencio es total y a ratos se pueden escuchar los sonidos propios del monte, lo que contribuye mucho a la magia del entorno.
Shortly after, we left the mules on a hill and began descending to the cave. The network of open or semi-open chambers, combined with the galleries, gives it a majestic and tranquil atmosphere. At times, the silence is absolute, and at others, you can hear the sounds of the forest, adding to the magic of the place.

De entre todas, muy llamativa me resultó esta primera, pues en la cueva habita la colonia mas grande dle mundo de murciélagos mariposa, nombre científico Nyctiellus lepidus, que comparte su hábitat con otras especies

Among them, this first one stood out to me, inside the cave lives the world’s largest colony of butterfly bats (Nyctiellus lepidus), which share their habitat with other species.

Y por fin, aquí está, la estalagmita mas alta de las Américas y probablemente del mundo, con 67,2 metros de la base a la cima. Para que tengan una idea de su dimensión, en esta imagen hay dos personas, una a la derecha de la base, que puede localizarse por la luz de su casco, y otra entre la base y el objetivo de la cámara, que puede localizarse por su traje naranja. Cuando hayan localizado las dos personas comprenderán el tamaño de la estalagmita y la profundidad del foso en que se encuentra
And finally, here it is: the tallest stalagmite in the Americas and possibly the world, standing at 67.2 meters from base to tip. To give you an idea of its scale, in this image, there are two people—one to the right of the base (visible by their helmet light) and another between the base and the camera (in an orange suit). Once you spot them, you’ll grasp the size of the stalagmite and the depth of the pit it’s in.
