Have You Heard of Cebu’s Other Beloved Patroness? Have you ever felt lost and turned to prayer for guidance? Are you looking for a place of peace, healing, and miracles? If yes, then maybe it's time to visit the Nuestra Señora de la Regla — the beloved “Birhen sa Regla” of Lapu-Lapu City. While many know about the Santo Niño de Cebu, there is another powerful devotion in Cebu that has brought hope and healing to countless people for centuries — the devotion to Nuestra Señora de la Regla. Her shrine in Lapu-Lapu City, is visited by thousands every year who believe in her miraculous help, especially during times of great need. Many Cebuanos see the blessings in their lives as a result of her motherly prayers and protection. 💒 ![Screenshot_20250709_140226_Lite.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/cupckate/23ujgCm6Gw73JvF7bG7rw83DuNukTpM4AYU9KGcKJ2QQg2AmRMdJ89KFRSwBLaY7Zu391.jpg) How Did the Devotion Start in Cebu? Based on what I had read, the devotion to the Virgen de la Regla began in the 1700s, when the Augustinian Order took over the parish of Opon, now known as Lapu-Lapu City. In 1735, the first parish priest, Fr. Francisco Avalle, introduced the people to the image of the Virgen de la Regla. He had spent 10 years in the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Regla in Chipiona, Spain, and was a strong devotee himself. When the people of Opon learned about the Virgin's story, they chose her as their patroness, had a large image made, and placed it at the altar. Soon, people began to witness miracles, and the devotion quickly grew. ![20241111_164325.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/cupckate/23z79DLcxsrQiwMf6jLLHG9ZjfcetcGrjK3mWzGNdJJYvM3DcmioqAxNXU8tR9oJisuaT.jpg) Even today, many believe that Nuestra Señora de la Regla continues to grant favors. Her devotees come to her shrine to pray, give thanks, and ask for help — especially for the protection of women and children, and for healing. Some pray silently in front of her image at the hagkanan (kissing area), while others write heartfelt letters of petition or gratitude, many of which are carefully kept in the church’s archives. The Feast Day of the Virgen de la Regla is celebrated every November 21, following a nine-day novena (Nov 12–20). It’s a time of deep prayer and joyful celebration, attended by people not only from Cebu but also by Cebuanos living abroad. “Viva Señora Birhen sa Regla!” — this powerful cry fills the air during the celebration, a beautiful reminder of how much she means to her people. ![Screenshot_20250709_140347_Lite.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/cupckate/23wMWRTsZS6NSwZxHuuCfofuXkeBrHFyseLFvvMreom86pEjoghSdPfoCgiy3DqLHLUjD.jpg) How to Get There? 🚏 If you're coming from Mactan-Cebu International Airport, you can ride a jeepney going to the Cebu-Mactan Ferry Terminal. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Virgen dela Regla National Shrine — it's just a few meters away from the pier. 🚏 To reach the Virgen sa Regla National Shrine (Birhen sa Regla Church) from Cebu City, you can take a ferry from Cebu City's Pier 3 to Muelle Osmeña Port in Lapu-Lapu, which is a short distance from the church. 🚏 For Ferry Option: Cebu City Pier 3 and Muelle Osmeña Port in Lapu-Lapu, the ferry service is provided by Metro Ferry, Inc.. The ferry ride takes about 20 minutes and the fare is around ₱37-40 (The pier is near the shrine, or you can take a short taxi ride from the port to the church). 🚏 You can also take a taxi or private car straight to the shrine for a faster and more comfortable ride. A taxi ride from Cebu City to Lapu-Lapu City takes approximately 15-20 minutes, covering a distance of about 11 kilometers. Expect to pay around ₱210-₱260 for a taxi (but it will still depend on the meter, especially if it is traffic). ![20241111_165304.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/cupckate/23yJ69qTGSJTxd51J7R1s8E84tzcK2FhJLTwmXwhyADhBvE24umRww85tgtATJqYdn2bx.jpg) Why Visit the Shrine?
