A Kallang Quick Stop, A Handmade Fishball Noodles

I hopped off at Kallang MRT already a little hangry LOL, and the hawker centre right across the station felt like the perfect pit stop. The place have an after-work vibe to it and a usual hawker sound of “next, next order!” I checked the bright red menu board of the Legacy Ban Mian.

The stall name promises noodles and it got my attention. Still, the one that held my attention the longest was the “Handmade Fishball Noodles.” Handmade anything shows care, and with fishballs, that usually means better bite, cleaner seafood flavour, and less of that bouncy-to-nowhere feel you get from the factory kind. Decision made, I placed my order!

I went for the dry version, the board lists it at $5.50 while the soup bowl is $5.00, because I love that glossy, savoury sauce you get when everything’s tossed together. The tray has a sunny yellow color, a bowl filled with noodles, greens, a generous serving of fried ikan bilis and shallots, nice fishballs, plus a side of clear soup topped with coriander. For a quick dinner, this looked delicious.

First bite, and yep, that handmade fishball is spot on. It has that delicate springy, not rubbery at all, and they have real fish flavour, subtle and sweet, instead of tasting like tasteless bouncy spheres. I counted five pieces in my bowl, which is generous for the price. There’s also a crab stick tucked in there for a sweet seafood flavor, a good handful of leafy greens for balance, and plenty of crispy ikan bilis that add extra flavor and crunch. Mix everything and you get this great texture combination, chewy noodles, tender fishballs, crackly anchovies, soft greens.

Speaking of noodles, these are nicely cooked, springy with a little chew, and they mixed up the dark sauce well. The sauce tastes savoury with a sweetness, so every lift of chopsticks brings that hawker-style umami. If you enjoy dry noodles that don’t get clumpy halfway through, you’ll be happy here, mine stayed slick and slurpable to the last bite.

Don’t skip the soup. Many stalls treat the complimentary bowl like nothing, but Legacy’s version is clean and flavoursome. It tastes like an actual stock, not just hot water with a dash of salt. A couple of sips between mouthfuls resets the palate so you can keep diving back into the sauce-coated noodles. Simple, but it makes the meal feel complete.

Value wise, this hits the sweet spot. For about five to six dollars, you get a satisfying bowl with real handmade fishballs, plenty of toppings, and a side soup that’s flavorsome.

Overall, Legacy Ban Mian’s Handmade Fishball Noodles deliver exactly what I hoped for, honest textures, real fish flavour, and that comforting hawker satisfaction. I’ll be back to explore the rest of the menu, the ban mian and mee hoon kueh seems nice too, but for now, consider this fishball noodles a good deal!
