Feeling Better with a Warm Bowl of Fish Soup

Last night’s dinner was meant to go up before bedtime, but I sleep early... wasn’t feeling my best and decided to listen to my body for once, haha. The weather’s been all over the place lately: warm and sticky one minute, then a sudden heavy rain the next. Maybe that’s why I felt a little off. So I went for my favorite kind of comfort: a steaming bowl of sliced fish soup.

From the first sip, I knew I chose well. The broth was clear and light yet full of flavor... the kind that warms your throat and also from the inside out. You can taste that gentle base of garlic oil, and those tiny golden bits of fried garlic drifting on top add a savory crunch. I love when a “simple” soup shows layers; this one did exactly that.

The bowl came loaded with all the healthy, feel-good extras. Bittergourd slices brought a pleasant, slight bitterness that "taste healthy" without overpowering the broth. Tomato slices softened into tender, juicy bites, giving little taste of tanginess which is a good balance with the bitter gourd. There were bright green vegetables as well, still crisp and fresh, adding both color and crunch. Thin slices of ginger also made this dish feel like I'm eating a healthy food. It soothes the throat too so it's a good addition to this soup aside from the aroma it brings.

And the main topping: plenty of Batang (Spanish mackerel) slices. They were fresh and clean-tasting (no fishy taste at all—just firm), the flesh is flaky. I really appreciate when fish is sliced just right, thick enough to feel substantial, thin enough to drink with the soup without feeling heavy. If you look at the photos, you’ll see how generous the bowl was; every spoonful seemed to bring up something good.

There were noodles tucked inside too, the kind that slip and twirl easily around chopsticks. They soaked up the broth nicely, giving each bite a light, savory taste. On nights when you want comfort without feeling heavy, this is a good choice. Clear soup, fresh fish, crunchy vegetables, a touch of garlic, and ginger. Nothing fancy... just pure flavors done right.

By the time I set the spoon down, I already felt better. It’s amazing how a simple bowl can reset your mood and your energy, especially when the weather can’t decide what it wants to be. I went to sleep early, and I’m waking up today feeling more like myself... enough to finally write this post and share it with you, LOL.

Overall, this was a nourishing, satisfying dinner that ticked all my boxes... clean flavors, fresh ingredients, generous portion, and that soothing warmth I was craving. If you’re riding the same weather issue, consider a bowl of fish soup. I’ll definitely be back for another round soon, maybe I’ll try a milky broth version next time, or add rice for a heartier meal. For now, I’m just grateful for a simple bowl that did exactly what I needed: comfort, heal, and make me smile.
