Hawker-Style Burger Night at Chops & Sear

After discovering Chops & Sear last month, I completely forgot about McDonald’s... LOL. The burgers here are more than enough to stop me from craving the distinct fast-food style ones. I actually prefer the taste and authenticity of the hawker-style burger! So tonight, I visited Chops & Sear again to enjoy a Smashed Double Cheeseburger.

I’m loving the brioche bun, especially since it’s doused in butter and perfectly seared on the flat top.

The plate arrived looking appetizing and neatly presented: a golden, glossy bun hugging the seared double beef patty, a slab of melty cheese, and a crunchy combination of lettuce and cabbage. On the side, there was a creamy potato salad, a seared chunk of corn on the cob, and twin dips... ketchup and a pale, tangy mayo. Everything felt familiar in the best way, like a diner classic that I've been craving in the past view days.

First bite and I already know that I will enjoy this meal. It’s got that char edge taste to it, the kind of beefy, smoky aroma. The middle of the patty stayed juicy, with a gentle pepper-salt seasoning that let the beef stand out. The cheese folded in between the patty and combined with a light swipe of mayo, so every bite felt moist without being messy.

The bun? Soft inside with a light toast outside, slightly buttery, just sturdy enough to hold all the juices while taking a big bite on it. I liked the touch of cabbage with the lettuce... extra crunch and a faint sweetness that freshened each mouthful.

Let’s talk sides because they’re not an afterthought here. The potato salad is the MVP: chunky and cool, with a creamy dressing that taste like a combination of cream and mayo (not to sure to be frank). The corn on the cob is cute and lightly—peppered, lightly buttered, and naturally sweet. I alternated between the corn, a forkful of potato salad, then a chomp of the burger, and the rhythm just worked. If you want to build your own mini sauce party, the ketchup adds bright acidity while the mayo brings a mild, eggy tang. Dip, bite, smile, repeat.

Ambiance-wise, this hawker centre feels kind of relaxed, no-pressure vibe I crave on weeknights. You order, you wait a bit as the grills hiss, you watch the movement of the people, then you settle in with a plate that feels both familiar and satisfying. It’s casual, it’s spacious, and it’s easy to get comfortable enough to linger for an extra few minutes after the last bite.

Would I tweak anything? Maybe a touch more char or a pinch of spice in the patty to push the contrast even further... but that’s a personal preference. The overall balance is already solid: juicy beef, soft-buttery bun, crisp greens, and sides that make the meal feel complete without weighing it down.

Overall, Chops & Sear gave me exactly what I wanted: a straightforward, well-executed burger set in a chill setting. No frills, just honest comfort food that hits the spot. I’m already eyeing their other menu boards... there’s a pasta section and some grilled chicken calling my name. I’ll definitely be back soon for round two.
