Roast Chicken Rice, with a Porky Twist

I went classic for lunch today... chicken rice but with a little upgrade: a half-and-half plate of roasted chicken and roasted pork, plus a soy-braised egg which is my favorite add-on to this dish. The stall kept it simple: aromatic and flavorful rice, a neat slab of chopped roasted pork, slices of roasted chicken, a drizzle of light sauce over everything, and a few slices of cucumber. Comfort food, hawker-style!

First, the rice. It’s the best part of a chicken rice dish and this one did its job beautifully. Each grain was separate and it's glistening with the chicken oil, fragrant but not too greasy. You know that moment when the spoon just slides through and you can already taste the chicken stock? That. Very satisfying.

The roasted chicken is on that sweet spot of juicy and savory. The skin wasn’t aggressively crisp, more of a gentle roast, but there was enough roasting to bring out a smoky flavor. Flavor-wise, it has subtle clean taste rather than heavily marinated, nice if you like to build your own sauce with chili and ginger-garlic. I did, of course. The chili had a nice zing; not too spicy, but it heat up every bite and made the chicken more flavorful.

Then came the roasted pork. I always worry about dried-out slices, but this was tender, with a good ratio between the meat and the fat. The crackling had that light, crunchy (not the thick, tooth-test kind), and it paired so well with the rice that I kept alternating: pork–rice–chili–ginger, repeat. If you gave me just a bowl of this rice and a bunch of that pork, I’d still be happy. LOL

Now, the egg. I was excited for a runny yolk to sauce the rice, but it came out overcooked... it's a bit chalky, the edges a bit browned. Not a big deal, just a small “awww man” moment. With everything else so good, a softer egg would have turned this into a Micheline recommended chicken rice dish :D Next time I’ll ask if they can do it a little less done.

Ambience-wise, the hawker centre was calm today. Not many people, easy to find a seat, and no need queue haha. It was one of those quietly pleasant lunches where you can actually hear your thoughts and enjoy your food at your own pace. Nothing fancy... just clean tables, some people talking, and a steady flow of trays going by.

Price check: my combo plate with egg came to $7. For hawker pricing, that’s a bit on the expensive side, especially if you’re comparing to a single-protein chicken rice. That said, the portion was decent and I did get both roasted chicken and roasted pork, so I can see how the numbers add up. Still, I felt it in the wallet a bit.

Overall thoughts: a flavorful, satisfying plate with an excellent rice and nicely done roasts, I'm a bit disappointed by an overcooked egg and a price that’s more on the more expensive side. Would I eat it again? Yup... especially if they can improve the egg next time. The calm, not-so-crowded vibe helped the whole experience feel a little more “treat yourself” than “grab-and-go,” and sometimes that’s exactly the lunch mood you want.
