When we perform baptism by immersion in water, we are testifying that we have communion with Christ as children of God and communion with the body of Jesus Christ, which is the Church.
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 But John opposed him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" 15 But Jesus answered, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." So he left him. 16 After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him. 17 And a voice came from heaven, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

We find this picture of Jesus's story extremely interesting, since the Lord Jesus Christ began his public ministry from the moment he was baptized. In those days, John the Baptist gathered people together and called them to repentance, confessing their sins and baptizing them in the river by immersion. Now let's consider this: Why did the Lord Jesus, a man without sin, ask to be baptized in the waters?
The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world."
John 1:29
From the beginning, John the Baptist refused, knowing that Jesus Christ was the only one who could take away the sin of the world. And how could John the Baptist have any involvement in something so sublime? But Jesus Christ told him to please allow it, since at that moment Jesus was completely identifying himself with us in the sacrificial aspect, and this demanded obedience to God.
Each of us is called to follow Jesus' example, and here baptism shows us a key part of that commitment. In baptism, Jesus has identified himself with us, just as we identify with him when we pass through the waters of baptism; we do so publicly. At the moment of baptism, we are presenting ourselves as Christians who believe in his death and resurrection, thus demonstrating our desire to live according to God's word and his will, following every step Jesus takes in our lives.
Baptism is that step of faith, that public expression in which we manifest a connection with the Lord and with our fellow members of the Body of Christ. We join together to run this race together, declaring that we are part of the same body and that we are a new creation through the life of Jesus Christ in us.
Cuándo realizamos el bautismo de inmersión en las agua estamos dando testimonio de qué tenemos comunión con Cristo como hijos de Dios y comunión con el cuerpo de Jesucristo que es la iglesia.
Entonces Jesús vino de Galilea a Juan al Jordán, para ser bautizado por él. 14 Mas Juan se le oponía, diciendo: Yo necesito ser bautizado por ti, ¿y tú vienes a mí? 15 Pero Jesús le respondió: Deja ahora, porque así conviene que cumplamos toda justicia. Entonces le dejó. 16 Y Jesús, después que fue bautizado, subió luego del agua; y he aquí los cielos le fueron abiertos, y vio al Espíritu de Dios que descendía como paloma, y venía sobre él. 17 Y hubo una voz de los cielos, que decía: Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien tengo complacencia.

Vemos este cuadro de la historia de Jesús demasiado interesante ya que el señor Jesucristo inició su ministerio público desde el momento en que fue bautizado. En esos días Juan el autista convocaba a las personas y llamaba al arrepentimiento confesando sus pecados y bautizándolos en el río mediante inmersión. Ahora pensemos lo siguiente: ¿porque el señor Jesús que era un hombre sin pecado pidió pasar por las aguas del bautismo?.
El siguiente día vio Juan a Jesús que venía a él, y dijo: He aquí el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo.

Desde un principio Juan el Bautista se negó ya que sabía que Jesucristo era el único que podía quitar el pecado del mundo y: ¿como Juan el Bautista tendría implicancia en algo tan sublime?. Pero Jesucristo le dijo que por favor se lo permitiera ya que en ese momento jesús se estaba identificando completamente en el aspecto sacrificial con nosotros y esto demandaba obediencia a Dios.
Cada uno de nosotros estamos llamados a seguir el ejemplo de Jesús y aquí el bautismo nos muestra una parte clave en el compromiso, Jesús en el bautismo se ha identificado con nosotros así como también nosotros nos identificamos con él cuando pasamos por las aguas del bautismo, lo hacemos públicamente. En el momento del bautismo nos estamos presentando como cristianos que creemos en su muerte y resurrección, mostrando así nuestro deseo de vivir conforme la palabra de Dios y su voluntad siguiendo cada paso de Jesús en nuestra vida.
El bautismo es ese paso de fe, esa expresión pública en la que manifestamos una conexión con el señor y con nuestros hermanos miembros del cuerpo de Cristo, nos unimos para correr esta carrera juntos declarando que somos parte del mismo cuerpo y que somos una nueva creación a través de la vida de Jesucristo en nosotros.
