Hello everyone! Last weekend I decided to visit Dovrefjell (mountains in Norway) again and hunt for musk oxen. This time I wanted to test my equipment and my body before realizing my dream - photographing a musk ox in winter during a blizzard. So I decided to start in May before I go there in winter because there is still snow on the mountain tops but the temperature does not drop to minus 30 degrees Celsius but remains within minus 4-5 degrees. The most important thing for me was to check my condition while carrying a heavy backpack with equipment and without snowshoes.
W ostatni weekend postanowiłem ponownie odwiedzić Dovrefjell (góry w Norwegii) i zapolować na piżmowoły. Tym razem chciałem przetestować swój sprzęt jak i organizm przed realizacją swojego marzenia – sfotografowania piżmowoła w zimie podczas zamieci śnieżnej. Wybrałem więc na początek za nim wyruszę tam w zimie mniej ekstremalne warunki czyli ostatni weekend maja ponieważ na szczytach gór leży jeszcze śnieg ale temperatura nie spada do minus 30 stopni Celsjusza tylko utrzymuje się w granicach minus 4-5 stopni. Najbardziej zależało mi na sprawdzeniu swojej kondycji przy noszeniu ciężkiego plecaka ze sprzętem no i jeszcze bez rakiet śnieżnych.
This time, however, I was not as lucky as the last time during my stay on Dovrefjell and I did not meet a herd of musk oxen (you can read about it in the post - https://peakd.com/photography/@czucher/dreams-come-true). I only came across one specimen at the foot of the mountains, and not at the top in the snow, as I wanted. Interestingly, it was circling very close to the trail for tourists and at some point, after taking a dozen or so photos of him, when I wanted to avoid him, I violated his safety zone. So he gave me a clear signal to go away, snorting at me and hitting a small tree with his horns. He did not have to signal it to me twice because I hurriedly walked away to a safe distance and started up the mountain to look for other individuals in the snow.
Tym razem jednak nie miałem tyle szczęścia co ostatnim razem podczas pobytu na Dovrefjell i nie spotkałem stada piżmowołów ( możecie o tym przeczytać w poście - https://peakd.com/photography/@czucher/dreams-come-true ). Natrafiłem tylko na jednego osobnika i to u podnóża gór, a nie tak jak chciałem na szczycie na śniegu. Co ciekawe krążył bardzo blisko szlaku dla turystów i w pewnym momencie po zrobieniu mu kilkunastu fotek w momencie gdy chciałem go ominąć to naruszyłem jego strefę bezpieczeństwa i dał mi wyraźny sygnał bym się oddalił pofukując na mnie i uderzając w małe drzewko swoimi rogami. Nie musiał mi dwa razy tego sygnalizować bo pośpiesznie odszedłem na bezpieczną odległość i ruszyłem w górę szukać innych osobników na śniegu.
I wandered in the mountains for several hours in various conditions because the weather on that day was very changeable and unfortunately I did not meet any musk ox anymore. However, I managed to take nice photos of the golden plover (Pluvialis apricaria), and most importantly, I already know that I need to be better prepared if I want to go hiking in the winter (exercise a lot and get some great clothes).
Łaziłem po górach przez kilkanaście godzin w różnych warunkach ponieważ pogoda w tym dniu była bardzo zmienna i niestety nie spotkałem już żadnego piżmowoła ale udało mi się zrobić fajne zdjęcia siewki złotej (Pluvialis apricaria) no i co najważniejsze wiem już , że muszę się lepiej przygotować gdybym chciał wyruszyć na piżmowoły zimą ( dużo ćwiczyć i zaopatrzyć się w super odzież ).
PS. I will write a separate post about the Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria) because it is a very nice and interesting bird.
