Success… This word is something I don't think I've really sat down to ponder upon.
Looking at it, I feel like I really don't know what it means because there is no perfect definition. Some people say success is defined as the achievement of a desired goal, aim, or outcome, and it is often characterized by favourable results, wealth, achievement, or even prosperity.
Now if I critically look at this definition, and say it's 100% correct, then I'm saying that at this point in my life, I'm far from being successful. But that's far from the truth because I believe that success is fulfillment.
Let’s give an instance: Let’s say I'm working as a banker with so much money and wealth and every day I feel like I don't belong in that setting and so I'm just there for the money and to make ends meet. In this situation, am I seen to be successful? Yes, in the eyes of people I am but inwardly I know I'm unsuccessful because in truth, I'm far from being fulfilled.
I want to live a life where even in my old age, I will be happy to say, Yes, I'm successful. Yes, I fulfilled my dreams and aspirations and I impacted lives. That is success.
I see some persons striving so hard to gather as much wealth as they can gather and at the end of it all, it seems like it all was a waste. Nobody tells us that, when we grow old, wealth and affluence won't mean much.
I want to live my dream, do what I'm passionate about and leave a legacy behind. That is what success means to me.
Now this is not me saying wealth and affluence are bad. No, those are rewards for work. All I'm saying is, defining success by how much we have in our accounts or the quantity of assets we have is never the right definition because if that is what we call success, then everyone who doesn’t have much will automatically be seen as a failure, and that’s not true. Success is deeply personal, and for me, it is fulfillment, impact, and living a life true to my purpose.
