I’m so thrilled to finally join Needlework Monday for the very first time! I've been wanting to share my current crochet project for a while now—and today’s the day!
But before I get into what I’m working on, let me take you back to where it all began.
My crochet journey started in high school, like many others, as part of a home economics class. I remember my very first project—a humble pen holder—that took me weeks to finish. Compared with my classmates, I think I am the one who enjoyed it a lot more than they did. After that, I put down my hook for years and honestly didn’t think I’d pick it up again.
Then came the pandemic. With work on pause for almost three months, I found myself creatively restless. I dabbled in watercolor painting, but it was crochet that truly captured my heart again. It became a lifeline—something that helped me cope mentally while being stuck at home. And to my surprise, it even turned into a small source of income! Since it´s been years since I crocheted, it was my Mom who helped me to remember how to hold a crochet hook and yarn again. Then I studied doing amigurumis (crocheted dolls) on my own through youtube, I fell in love with it. Growing up, I am really obsessed with dolls, just thinking that I can make one on my own, make clothes and accessories for them it´s like healing my childhood.
Fast forward to today, and crochet has grown into more than just a hobby. I've started treating it like a micro business—joining bazaars and taking custom orders. But beyond the financial aspect, what fills me with joy is the support I’ve received from my friends and family. That kind of encouragement means the world. My friends will visit my bazaars to show their support, my family helps me out whenever I have a pop-up markets, they help me attach keyrings or stamp my shop logo on my brown bags for packigings and all others simple little stuff. Besides those things, random people appreciating your craft is enough for you to keep going.
Speaking of support, one of my cousins, who lives in Australia, recently requested a set of Star Wars-inspired crochet keychains—R2D2, Chewbacca, Stormtrooper, C3PO, and Darth Vader. I couldn’t be more excited about this order!
I must admit, it’s been ages since I last watched Star Wars, so I rewatched the movies to refresh my memory. It brought back such warm memories—especially watching them with my Dad when I was younger. Now, I watched it with my boyfriend which makes it special and fun.
Out of all the characters, I decided to start with R2D2. Not only is he my favorite, but he’s also the easiest to crochet. There’s just something about that smart, sassy little droid. He’s saved the Jedi countless times—basically the unsung hero of the galaxy! As mentioned, I will be making other characters too! so you might have to expect my following blogs to be about them and my journey on making them! I am so happy how it turned out, he is so cute! Imagine you have this little fella by your side keeping you company, making sure you are safe from those mean droids!
Can you guess whom am I going to make next?
