Our last visit to Puerto Cabello stretched out for several hours, and honestly, we were blown away by the vibe the city has now! I took so many photos that trying to cram everything into one post just didn't feel right. We've been here tons of times since my wife was born here, so we know the city well. That’s why the change is so impressive and great to see—even if it's mostly just the historic center and there's still work to do in the residential areas. Today, I'm showing you what we saw at the Malecón (waterfront) and Plaza Bolívar, which has some cool new additions for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of the Capture of Puerto Cabello.
>#### Una noche mágica en Puerto Cabello en su histórico y renovado corazón
>La pasada visita a Puerto Cabello se extendió por varias horas, quedamos encantados con la vibra que ahora tiene la ciudad, retraté tantas cosas, que resumirlas para poder mostrarlas y hablar de ellas en una sola publicación no me pareció justo. Hemos visitado la ciudad muchas veces en el pasado porque mi esposa es nacida ahí, la conocemos bien y por eso su cambio nos impresiona y agrada muchísimo, aunque solo es en el casco histórico y hay mucho por hacer en las zonas residenciales. Hoy les muestro lo que fue nuestra visita al malecón y la Plaza Bolívar que tiene varios cambios debido a los 200 años de la Batalla de la toma de Puerto Cabello.

##### Exploring the nightlife and the revitalization
While historic sites are beautiful during the day, these spots really shine at night. Everything is well-lit, and you can appreciate the new structures and LED screens. Strolling through the streets of the historic district, it’s great to see the effort going into renovating houses that are over 250 years old, beautifying their facades, and giving them new life. Several are now inns, restaurants, museums, or cool spots to check out. This used to only be the case for the houses right on the waterfront, but now all the back streets are just as stunning.
>Aunque es muy bonito visitar sitios históricos de dia, estas zonas se aprecian muy bien de noche, todo está bien iluminado y se pueden apreciar nuevas estructuras y pantallas leds. Cuando caminas por las calles del casco histórico es agradable ver los esfuerzos por remodelar casas que tiene más de 250 años, embellecer sus fachadas y darle uso, varias ahora son posadas, restaurantes, museos o sitios de interés que puedes visitar. Esto antes solo se apreciaba en las casa que están frente al malecón, ahora todas las calles posteriores estan asi de bonitas.

After walking around for quite a while, we decided to head back to the Malecón to sit on a bench, catch the sea breeze, and rest up before making it to the Plaza Bolívar. Our daughter didn't stay seated for long, though—she took off to play because some of the vendors were blowing giant bubbles. I’m sharing a GIF so you can get a better sense of that sea breeze sweeping the bubbles away!
>Luego de caminar un largo rato por las calles, decidimos volver al malecón a sentarnos en una de sus bancas, recibir la brisa del mar y descansar para recuperarnos e ir finalmente hasta la Plaza Bolívar. Nuestra hija no duró mucho tiempo sentada, porque aprovechó para jugar ya que algunos de los vendedores informales de la zona estaban soplando burbujas de gran tamaño. Decidí compartirles un gif para que puedan apreciarlas mejor la brisa que hacía frente al mar y se llevaba las burbujas.

##### Runners, history, and modern art
While we were still chilling on the Malecón, we were surprised by a huge crowd coming down the side street. From a distance, we couldn't tell what they were up to, but we heard lots of cheering and excitement. As they got closer, we realized they were people of all ages, led by instructors from local gyms. They'd gotten permission from the city council for a weekly gathering to take their students jogging through the historic center. I thought this initiative was awesome—it totally explains why they're using the slogan now: **_"Puerto Cabello, The City That's Trending."_**
>Estando todavía sentados en el malecón, nos sorprendió un gran número de personas que venían por la calle al costado, desde la distancia no se percibía que hacían, pero si se escuchaban gritos de ánimo y emoción. Cuando ya estuvieron más cerca de nosotros nos dimos cuenta que eran personas de todas las edades liderados por instructores de gimnasios locales que ese dia de la semana han pedido permiso a la municipalidad para agrupar a sus alumnos y llevarlos a trotar por el casco histórico. Me parecio genial esta iniciativa, ya entiendo porque usan ahora el eslogan: **_"Puerto Cabello, la ciudad que esta de moda"_**
Once the runners passed, we finally made it to the Plaza. The first thing you notice is the monument to the surrender of the Spanish after their defeat in the battle that took place two hundred years ago, when the plaza was captured on November 8, 1823. The monument is an allegory of the moment General José Antonio Páez received the sword of the Spanish Brigadier Sebastián de la Calzada as a sign of surrender. This battle is a huge deal for Venezuela because it finally defeated and expelled the last Spanish stronghold, sealing the independence of the new nation.
>Pasado el grupo de maratonistas, finalmente decidimos llegar hasta la plaza, lo primero que encuentras es un monumento a la rendición de los españoles tras vencerlos en la batalla que se celebró hace doscientos años, cuando esta plaza fue tomada por asalto el 8 de noviembre de 1823. El monumento es una alegoría del momento en que el Gral. José Antonio Páez recibe la espada del brigadier español Sebastián de la Calzado en señal de rendición. Esta batalla es muy importante para Venezuela, porque con ella se terminó de vencer y expulsar al último reducto español y así sellar la independencia de una nueva nación.

I loved that this monument is flanked by several murals highlighting moments of the battle. But the coolest part is that they were painted on large canvases propped up against old walls—the remnants of colonial houses around the plaza that didn't survive the battle and the wear and tear of the years. The artistic style is very characteristic of local artists—Iván Darío Hernández, Nelson Vielma, Ana Hernández, Alexis Ochoa, and Evans Severino are the creators. These paintings have a watercolour look; they're not super realistic but definitely vibrant and colorful.
>Me gusto muchos que a este monumento lo acompañan varios murales que destacan momentos de la batalla, pero lo que más me gusta es que fueron pintados sobre grandes lienzos que se apoya en viejas paredes que quedaron de casas coloniales que estaban alrededor de la plaza, pero no sobrevivieron a la batalla y las inclemencias de los años. El estilo artístico es muy característico de los artistas de la zona, sus autores son Iván Darío Hernández, Nelson Vielma, Ana Hernández, Alexis Ochoa y Evans Severino. Estas pinturas tiene apariencias de acuarelas, nos muy realistas pero sí bastante coloridas

##### Stone walls and LED spheres
While the murals are a fantastic detail, I was truly captivated by the efforts to preserve the old walls of what was once a house. The columns are painted white with lighting at their bases to make them stand out. The walls are an accumulation of stones that reminded me of San Antonio and Santa María de la Cabeza castles in Cumaná, Sucre state, because their blocks are made of coral and a binding mix of animal blood. The old frames of what used to be large doorways still have their original wooden lintels. They look weathered by time but clearly show the quality of construction from that era.
>Aunque los murales son un gran detalle, quede encantado con los esfuerzos por conservar las viejas paredes de lo que alguna vez fue una casa. Sus columnas están pintadas de blanco con iluminación en sus bases para que destaquen, las paredes son una aglomeración de piedras que me hacen recordar los castillos San Antonio y Santa María de la Cabeza en la ciudad de Cumana en el estado Sucre, porque sus bloques son de coral y una mezcla aglutinante de sangre de animales. Las que alguna vez fueron los marcos de grandes puertas aún conservan el dintel de madera que usaban para sostener la estructura, se observan desgastados por los años, pero deja claro la calidad de la construcción de aquella época.
The plaza also has a modern twist: an LED screen placed near Simón Bolívar’s equestrian statue that displays the Venezuelan flag; a cube resting on one of its points, with each face being an LED screen that projects shapes to give the illusion of infinite depth; and an LED sphere projecting the surface of the moon and other planets. It’s all about blending the past with the modern and giving a special flair to these iconic spaces that witnessed such big moments in history.
>La plaza también tiene un toque de modernidad, una pantalla led apoyada sobre la estatua ecuestre del Libertador Simón Bolívar que muestra la bandera de Venezuela, un cubo apoyado sobre uno de sus vértices, cuyas caras cada una es una pantalla led que proyecta formas para dar impresión de profundidad infinita. También una espera led que proyecta la superficie de la luna y otros planetas del sistema solar, todo para combinar la pasado con lo moderno y darle un toque especial a estos espacios icónicos de la ciudad que vieron grandes momentos de la historia.
