Hello to the Vibes community. Today I bring you a classic of Brazilian music. I hope you enjoy it.
"Girl from Ipanema" was written in 1962, with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes, with English lyrics later written by Norman Gimbel.
The lyrics tell the story of a young woman who is admired by the narrator as she walks along the beach. The song has a catchy melody and a bossa nova rhythm that makes it irresistible to dance to. Despite its popularity, "The Girl from Ipanema" has been criticized for its portrayal of Brazilian women.
The story, however, dates back to 1962 in a bar called Veloso—now called "Garota de Ipanema"—where Vinicius and Moraes would see a young woman passing by in the afternoons who would occasionally stop to buy cigarettes, and, inspired by her beauty, they composed the famous song.
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes
Each one she passes goes "ah!"
When she walks she's like a samba that
Swings so cool and sways so gently
That when she passes
Each one she passes goes "ah!"
Oh, but he watches her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her?
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead not at him
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes he smiles
But she doesn't see
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes
Each one she passes goes "ah!"
When she walks she's like a samba that
Swings so cool and sways so gently
That when she passes
Each one she passes goes "ah!"
Oh, but he watches her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her?
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead not at him
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes he smiles
But she doesn't see
She just doesn't see
No, she doesn't see
She just doesn't see
