Kirby Super Star, called Kirby's Fun Pak in PAL video signal regions, is a 1996 action-platform game for the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom made by HAL Laboratory (Japanese video game developer based in Chiyoda, Tokyo) and published by Nintendo. It is part of the Kirby series and is a collection of eight games — seven short adventures with similar gameplay and two fun minigames.

If you have played any Kirby game, you must know his main trick is inhaling and swallowing enemies. If an enemy has a special ability, Kirby gets that power/ability until he is hit a few times or swaps it for a new one.

The Story

Dream Land is in trouble again, and Kirby appears to save the day! This time, King Dedede is stealing all the food, while Dyna Blade, Meta Knight, and other villains are causing mayhem too.

Use Kirby’s powers to create a helper, or have a friend join in for two-player action. Play through eight exciting games like Spring Breeze, Gourmet Race, Dyna Blade, Great Cave Offensive, Revenge of Meta Knight, and Milky Way Wishes, plus the fun challenges like Megaton Punch and Samurai Kirby. Each game offers something unique, with plenty of surprises.

The Graphics and Sound

The game has crisp, colorful visuals and charming animations. This is pure eye candy. Each copy ability comes with its own adorable costume, making transformations a treat to see. Though enemy designs are more “cute filler” than unforgettable.

The real star here is the audio. So many ear-catching tracks ranging from cheerful J-pop vibes to high-energy rock, all looping perfectly without driving you crazy. Add in perfect sound effects ranging from that satisfying shlurp when Kirby inhales an enemy to the magical chime of gaining a new power, and you have got one of the best soundscapes on the SNES.

The Gameplay

The best part of Kirby Super Star is how easy it is to jump in and play. It is fun, simple, and sometimes surprisingly challenging. You play as Kirby, who can inhale enemies and steal their abilities. Kirby can get over 15 powers like Beam, Plasma, and Yo-Yo, each offering multiple unique attacks. You can even turn your power into a “Helper” ally, controlled by either the CPU or a friend for cooperative play.

The game includes nine different modes, each with its own style:

Spring Breeze: A simple, level-based intro adventure.

Dyna Blade: Stop a giant bird from destroying Dream Land.

The Great Cave Offensive: Explore a massive cave, find treasures, and escape.

Gourmet Race: Race King Dedede while grabbing as much food as possible.

Samurai Kirby: A lightning-fast reaction duel.

Megaton Punch: Smash the ground harder than your opponent.

Plus hidden modes that you will want to unlock for the full experience.

With so many powers, modes, and cooperative play, Kirby Super Star packs endless replay value.

My Verdict

Kirby Super Star is great in almost every way, except for the story, which is just okay. The graphics and sound are excellent. The gameplay is fun, full of variety, and has lots of extra things to find that keep you coming back. With nine different games included, there is plenty to replay and many secrets to discover.

Play it on the majestic Super Nintendo/Super Famicom or play it on a famous emulator.
