The worst trip I’ve ever taken in terms of problems (and I’d add that it was the worst in general) was without a doubt the return trip from Mexico... I love Mexico and the Mexican people, it was a wonderful vacation, but that return trip was terrible and extremely long.
We arrived at the airport, and the organization was kind of so and so meaning you had to queue in a specific way that turned out to be extremely inefficient time-wise (forgive me, I don’t remember the exact details, it’s been eight years after all). Then there was a huge waste of time at the security checks, where they were excessively nitpic, an outrageous waste of time.
Anyway, we finally board the plane, and what’s waiting for us is 9 to 10 straight hours of flying, overnight, when I should have been sleeping. You can imagine how comfortable it is to try to sleep sitting up, without even a pillow, and with the air conditioning blasting on you (which would later leave me a little "gift").
We land in Milan and need to catch a train to get back to our city, but the train station isn’t nearby, you have to take a shuttle bus. So we start looking for one. Problem is: everyone’s coming back from vacation, and every shuttle is packed. We’re at risk of missing our train, we keep looking and looking, and finally, by some miracle, we find one. We get on and make it to the station.
Because we wasted time looking for the bus, we’re at risk of missing the train, so we have to run for it. We manage to catch it, get on board... and the airplane’s air conditioning leaves its gift: a terrible sore throat.
On top of that, it was lunchtime, but the trains are from the Stone Age, so there was absolutely no food!
After a few more hours of traveling, we finally get off the train and arrive at the station in my city. We need to take the tram... and what happens? There’s a strike! Which meant walking 30–40 km under the blazing summer sun. At that point, exhausted, I called my parents to come pick us up and take us home.
According to them, we looked like zombies!
