This is the story of an epic prank, at times disgusting and that still today, despite several years having passed, always makes me laugh a lot when I tell it, born from the joint effort of some brilliant minds and a fantastic teamwork never seen before in a work environment. Oh yes, because this prank was born right at work... It all starts around autumn; you know in autumn there’s the invasion of stink bugs (for some years now we’ve had those brown Asian ones that are much more stinky, smart, and mean than our local green ones). At work the outer walls were literally full of them; as soon as you opened the window, tons of them came in, but they even came in if you didn’t open the windows, passing through some door that was opened... Since catching one and throwing it out meant finding five more inside afterwards, a colleague came up with the idea of taking a bottle, putting in a bit of water, and throwing in the stink bugs that were wandering around the office from time to time.
It then became a shared habit: you saw a stink bug, you took the bottle, and made it end up inside... Clearly the bottle was never emptied, and as you can imagine after a few weeks it didn’t exactly smell like roses in there... Once the stink bug season was over, we still had that bottle and since we were all a bunch of idiots at the office we racked our brains about what to do with it... And well, what could be better than a prank!
As it happened, the boss had his office near ours, with glass walls... An unbearable character, he took advantage of his position to fake overtime, always take breaks, always be arrogant in conversations as if he were the source of truth, so a worthy and deserving target. He often used markers, and one of them was out of ink... You’re already imagining the idea, aren’t you?
On a Friday, at the end of the work week, we took that very marker and went to a colleague’s garage to carry out the plan... As soon as the bottle with the dead stink bugs was opened, the air became unbreathable and acrid to the point that we all had to put on masks and goggles because our eyes were watering too. Then, with surgical precision using tweezers and a pipette, the liquid was inserted into the marker cartridge and that filthy object was sealed.
On Monday, the marker was put back in the boss’s office before he arrived; then it was just a matter of time before he opened it to use it and would fill his entire office with an unbearable stench... Except that that very morning he called into his office two of the participants in the prank, and we from the glass walls could see everything, waiting for the X moment...
Well, right while he was with them, he opened the marker and started writing, and we saw the two accomplices begin to cover their noses and push their chairs away from the paper he had written on. The boss didn’t seem to notice the smell, and we in our office were already starting to laugh... The boss went to write a second time, and when he did, the marker “exploded,” spreading liquid and stench everywhere in his office. At that point all three ran away from there, covering their noses and rubbing their eyes...
The boss went home for the day, and the office became “radioactive” for several days... We were doubled over laughing on the other side, and the two accomplices, when they came back, said they had never smelled anything like that in their lives.
