Sometimes I sit down and think how I manage to balance school work with all the other things I love doing, and honestly it has not been easy at all. I have a strong love for football, and I am not just playing for fun, I actually play for my school team and also represent my department. That means regular training, sometimes morning, sometimes evening, and also participating in inter school and inter faculty competitions.
Apart from football, I still play basketball. Many of my friends use to joke that I" want to kill myself" (se o fe pa ara re ni) with sports, because if I am not on the pitch then you can find me on the court. It is something I enjoy and it makes me feel alive. Sport has always been part of me, I can’t run away from it.
On top that, I am even an EXCOS in my department, serving as the Director of Sports. That responsibility means I have to organize games, encourage participation, plan small events and sometimes settle issues among players. It takes a lot of energy and time, and many times I worry it will affect my assignment, test and some lectures schedule.
Truly, balancing all these with my academics has not been smooth, I confess it rough. There are times training clash with lectures, or games fall during test week. I remember one time we had a departmental league final a day before one of my toughest exam due to some delays in academy calendar. I almost break down, but I still found a way to prepare, even if it meant reading overnight after the match.
What keep me going is commitment. I don’t allow my passion for sports to control me too much. Anytime it comes to my books, I try to give them serious attention. Even if I play football and basketball, my academics still remain number one, cos my parents are waiting to become proud of me as per first graduate to be in the family.
So for me, the balance is not perfect, but with discipline and sacrifice, I always escape through. And honestly, I am proud I have not allowed my line of passion to spoil my academic journey and thanks to my friend that he has been supportive of me in times of lectures and assignment.
