Peer pressure is one thing that every one of us has faced in one way or the other, no matter how strong we think we are. Sometimes, it’s not even the loud kind it’s that quiet feeling inside you that says, “If I don’t do this, they’ll laugh at me.”
I remember back in my school days, there was a time my friends planned to skip class just because we had a boring lecturer that day. They all looked at me and said, “Guy, come on, everyone is doing it.” For a moment, I almost agreed. I didn’t want to be the odd one out. But something in me said no. I went for the class alone that day, and guess what we had a surprise test. That small decision saved my grade that semester.
Peer pressure doesn’t always come as bad friends pushing you to do wrong things. Sometimes it’s just you, trying to look like others. Maybe dressing in a way you don’t even like, or spending money you don’t have just to fit in. I’ve been there before. I once bought a shoe I couldn’t afford, just to feel among later I regretted it when I couldn’t even eat good food for two days.
The truth is, trying to please people will never end. People’s opinions will keep changing. One day they’ll clap for you, another day they’ll laugh. So why not just live in your own truth?
I understand to stand alone doesn’t mean you are proud or stubborn, it simply means discipline and you know what you want. It’s not easy, but peace comes when you stop letting others control your actions.
And we can come to a conclusion that those who truly value you will respect you for being yourself not for pretending to be like them.
