Mimicking the Masters- Kevin Maguire- Adding Colour

Hello, I'm amazed and thankful at the outreach of my last post showing the process of this drawing from sketch to ink. This place is so much better than Instagram! Thanks to all of you for stopping by and voting, it means a lot. I thought I'd share my progress since then, adding colour and beginning to play around with an environment and mood.

Step One- Flat colours. The advantage of working with an initial tonal pass is that I can add flat colours over the top and still get a sense of colour variation. This was fairly quick to do, with the colour layer set to Overlay in Procreate. IMG_0220.jpg

Step Two- Rough Environment. Once I added in the background I used a different blend mode on the characters to sit them a little more into the environment. IMG_0228.jpg

Step Three- Tooling around. From here i enjoy to mess around with blend modes to look for 'happy accidents'. This 'Difference' blend mode on one of the background layers introduced some interesting red hues that added a bit of excitement to the image.

This gradient map over the image pulls all the colours towards a similar hue epectrum for greater unity.

This one just looks moody and noirish. Sin City vibes!

Next I'll be refining the background and doing a paint over of the characters. Hope you enjoy to see this process, take care.
