In this post I will be sharing with you how I made a beautiful gown for a customer. We are gradually approaching that period of the year when fashion designers will be fully busy before the start of the festive season. The end of the year is approaching and the festive season is gradually knocking on the door. Some people who doesn't want to be disappointed by their tailors are beginning to sew their dresses now. Apart from disappointment some are making their festive outfits early to avoid paying 'festive season' price which is often influenced by the rush and busy nature of that time.

As business owners we always pray for customers to troop into our business space but the stress is not always easy to deal with especially during these last few months of the year. I have learnt to have a specific time that I will stop taking new orders no matter how much you want to pay me. This is an tatics to tackle disappointing your customers. It also gives you ample time to work and rest without being under unnecessary duress.

Materials Needed - 3 yards of Ankara fabrics - 1½ yards of black lining - 1 yard of paper stay - Hemming gum - Breast pad - Scissors - Tailoring chalk - Matching threads

Measurements - Shoulder 14" - Bust 33" - Underbust 28" - Bustline 34" - Half length 15" - Waist 26" - Hip 36" - Blouse length 24" - Full body length 55"

Step by Step - We will fold the ankara fabrics into two and mark out the measurements starting from the blouse part of the gown. 1000253651.jpg

  • We will mark out the shoulder to the nipple point, shoulder to underbust, shoulder to waist and shoulder to the blouse length.
  • While marking the fabrics you have to pay attention to details especially the fact that the pattern on the fabric has directions. So, you must be meticulous not to cut against the pattern of the fabric. 1000253652.jpg

  • So, having taking the shoulder to nipple point measurement we have 9", the shoulder to underbust gave us 11.5", the horizontal distance between the nipple points is 8", for the half length we have 15" and blouse length is 23". 1000253659.jpg

  • So, proceed to cut out both the front and back pieces after you are done chalking the measurements on the fabric.

  • Next, cut out the lining for all the pieces (front and back). 1000253653.jpg

  • Next, cut your breast pad and paper stay and iron it to the front piece of the blouse accordingly.

  • Next, for the skirt part we will draft and cut the front piece first by using 31". We got that measurement simply by subtracting the blouse length from the full body length which is 55"-24".
  • Then cut the back piece afterwards and note that you will be adding zipper allowance. 1000253658.jpg

  • Now, join all the linings and iron them very well and join the pieces of the main fabric together too.

  • At this point you will use the lining to turn the fabric for both the front and back pieces of the blouse and skirt part.1000253664.jpg
  • Next give all the pieces a good press to flatten every bulging part of the fabrics and attach your zip.
  • Then neatly join the blouse and skirt together.
  • Next, cut and attach your sleeves to the dress. 1000253663.jpg

  • Next, shape the gown into the customer's measurements and do your fittings by wearing on your mannequin to check for necessary adjustments.
