The Lees kept a huge jigsaw puzzle going in one of the rooms of their home for their little Ludlow cousins to come and enjoy along with their Trent and Stepforth friends; this made a quiet, peaceful “third space” for all of those children.
Col. H.F. Lee was in heavy grief, having lost a mentor and a colleague in just two weeks of time, but watching all the little Ludlows with their huge personalities in the puzzle room putting the pieces of life together could always make him smile.
“No, Bigfoot is not a myth – absolutely not,” ten-year-old Glendella Ludlow said. “Probably a mistake, but not a myth. I've seen how that happens.”
“Wait – you've seen a sasquatch?” eight-year-old Edwina Ludlow said.
“I'm telling you, that whole thing is a mistake,” Glendella said. “See, I got this cousin – cousin Will, actually, who wears a size 22 shoe, is and is always talking about how he could have been a contender in basketball like some guy named Larry Bird or something, and drinking because he's mad. We were at my biological grandfather's 65th birthday in the Blue Ridge when Cousin Will had a bit too much and slid down a foothill – the first wet autumn day with all that dead and dying grass out there. So when he got up and started stumbling around trying to figure out what happened to him with all that grass all over him, that's how you get Bigfoot.”
“That's not safe,” seven-year-old Amanda Ludlow said. “That's not safe at all!”
“Shoulda looked at the blueprint called a map,” six-year-old Grayson Ludlow said. “Hills aren't just getting up in the morning falling on people.”
“So, you're telling us that the idea we have of Bigfoot is probably a big mistake,” ten-year-old Andrew Ludlow said. “I can see that because people do way too much drinking and not enough thinking, so you have a mistake like that and then have somebody not be sober when they were taking the picture. Giving their camera second-hand smoke problems.”
“Basically,” Glendella said.
“All I know is, nobody better take a picture of me like that!” Edwina said. “I absolutely will break bad – got me out here looking like a sasquatch!”
“That's not safe!” Amanda said.
“Yeah, we gotta make a 9-2-2 call on that real quick,” Andrew said as she shook her head. “Also about staying sober while on the edge of hills – we definitely gotta make some calls.”
