Does the Pope wear white socks?

If there were a disaster and I could save one family member or twenty strangers, of course, I’d save the family member. But here’s the dilemma: I have two. How could I choose?

Easy! I’d save the skinny one. In a crisis, there’s bound to be food shortages and, well… I rest my case.

Saving strangers seems risky anyway. They could be leftists (only jokin’… sort of), or worse, politicians. Since I wouldn’t have time for a quick get to know you session before launching the rescue, I’d need a way to separate the needy from the greedy, the wheat from the chaff. Maybe I’d pick the ones not wearing tracksuit bottoms, or the first to do ten push-ups…survival of the fittest and all that.

Better still, I could save the most prosperous-looking ones and hope for a fat reward. As my father always told me: if you work for nothing, you’ll never be idle.

I’ve never been much of a prankster. I know I sound like a pompous old biddy, but I just don’t see the fun in it. The closest I ever came was in the mid 1980s, when I secretly booked a holiday to Cuba for my fella. I organised his visa, leave from his college course, and time off work...no small feat since he worked for the state telecom company. I even packed his suitcase. All his friends knew, but we kept it under wraps for three months. Then, on the morning of departure, I woke him with a cuppa and the news that the taxi to the airport would be there in an hour.

If I could switch lives with someone for a single weekend, it would be the Pope and not just so I could ponce around in long flowing robes. No, I’d want to spend the weekend roaming the Vatican Library, finding out what’s what. You can’t tell me the answers to life, the universe, and everything aren’t tucked away in there somewhere.

Where are we?

What are we doing here?

And who the bloody hell is really running this dump?
