If you know me at all dear reader, you will not be surprised to learn that I can recall not a singe occasion on which I have been a dickhead. Lest age has dulled my memory, (I am somewhat advanced in years), I have canvassed the opinions of my siblings (2), close friends (5), as well as all of the exes I’m still on speaking terms with (4). They unanimously agreed, after some persuasion, that dickheadedness is entirely foreign to my character. According to them, I have consistently exhibited patience, empathy, courage and wisdom.
One former beau did vaguely recall an occasion when I might have been a bit of a bitch, but since he was unable to provide specifics, his testimony has been formally disqualified.
I try not to dwell on the past. Regrets are bad for the soul. But if I had to choose the ex I most regret, would it be the one who punched a hole in my kitchen door in anger, earning himself a trip to A&E? The one who asked me if I’d ever considered a makeover? Or the one who stole from me to furnish a love nest with my replacement? Hmm, let me pause for reflection for a moment. Yes, the last one. It's got to be him. The thief, the cheat, the duplicitous bounder who wasted five years of my life.
If I had to do it all again, I’d stick with my first love. We’re still good friends, and he’s still the same solid, loyal, steady soul he always was. A perfect counterbalance to my chaos. Had I stayed with him, I suspect my life would have been less of the crazy rollercoaster ride it's turned out to be.
