Welcome back to my blog. In today's adventure, we're discovering **Gemona**, a small Italian town located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region.
I was fortunate enough to visit Gemona on a recent trip to Udine and was truly fascinated by its **rich history and beauty**, so today I'd like to share some photos and interesting information with you.
The area became infamous in **1976** due to a **powerful earthquake** that struck the entire region: **it injured 3,000 people, killed 400, and destroyed 70% of the homes**. Gemona has also been sadly dubbed "the earthquake capital."

Bentornati sul mio Blog. Nell’avventura di oggi andiamo a scoprire **Gemona**, un piccolo comune italiano situato nella regione Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Ho avuto la fortuna di visitare Gemona in uno dei recenti viaggi a Udine e sono rimasta davvero affascinata **dalla sua ricchezza storica e dalla sua bellezza**, per cui oggi voglio condividere con voi qualche foto e informazione interessante.
La zona è diventata tristemente famosa nel **1976** a causa di un **potente terremoto** che interessò tutta la regione: **causò 3000 feriti, 400 morti e distrusse il 70% delle abitazioni**. Gemona è stata anche tristemente definita “la capitale del terremoto”.

The town lies 272 meters above sea level and is entirely **surrounded by the Julian Prealps**. The landscape is very evocative because the town seems nestled within the mountains (Mount Chiampon 1,709 meters, Mount Deneal 1,705 meters, Mount Cuarnan 1,276 meters, and others).
One of the most important tourist attractions is undoubtedly the **medieval castle**, which sits atop a hill and can be reached by a **150-step walk** from the historic center (the Salita dei Longobardi).
The **view** from the castle is truly breathtaking, offering a view of the valley, the Friulian plain, and the lush mountains.
Unfortunately, during my visit, some parts were undergoing restoration, so I was unable to fully enjoy this architectural masterpiece.
Il comune sorge a 272 metri sul livello del mare ed è interamente **circondata dalle Prealpi Giulie**. Il paesaggio è molto suggestivo perché il paese sembra incastonato all’interno dei monti (monte Chiampon 1709 metri, monte Deneal 1705 metri, Monte Cuarnan 1276 metri e altri).
Uno dei punti turistici più importanti è sicuramente il **castello medievale**, che si trova in cima a un colle ed è raggiungibile con una **passeggiata di 150 gradini** a partire dal centro storico (la Salita dei Longobardi).
Il **panorama** visibile dal Castello è davvero suggestivo, perché si possono osservare la vallata con tutta la vista sulla pianura friulana e le montagne ricche di vegetazione.
Purtroppo, durante la mia visita, alcune parti erano in corso di restauro, per cui non ho potuto godere a pieno di questa opera architettonica.

Due to ground subsidence in the 1976 earthquake, the **Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta** suffered severe damage. The right nave, along with its chapels, and part of the bell tower were completely destroyed.
Thanks to the **teamwork of residents, archaeological groups, and volunteers**, they managed to recover dozens of artistic fragments from the rubble and make the church safe again. The restoration of the Cathedral took many years, but it was **rebuilt completely faithfully to the original**, including the bell tower.
In **1986**, after ten years, the residents were finally able to experience the Cathedral again, and even **Pope Giovanni Paolo II** came to bless the fruit of their labor, donating a precious chalice that is now kept in the church.
A causa del cedimento del terreno a causa del terremoto del 1976, il **Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta**, subì gravissimi danni. Si distrusse completamente la navata destra, con le relative cappelle, e parte del campanile.
Grazie al **lavoro di squadra dei cittadini, dei gruppi archeologici e dei volontari**, riuscirono a recuperare decine di frammenti artistici fra le macerie e a rimettere in sicurezza la chiesa. L’opera di restauro del Duomo richiese tanti anni di lavoro, ma venne **ricostruito in maniera totalmente fedele all’originale**, compreso il campanile.
Nel **1986**, dopo dieci anni, i cittadini riuscirono finalmente a tornare a vivere il Duomo e persino il **papa Giovanni Paolo II** andò a benedire il frutto dell’estremo lavoro, regalando un prezioso calice che oggi è custodito nella chiesa.
This small mountain village taught me that **nature can sometimes be violent and dangerous**. However, I’m deeply impressed by the **resilience of the citizens** of Gemona and how they were able to rebuild everything that had been destroyed. An enchanting place, rich in history, **definitely worth a visit**!

Questo piccolo paese di montagna mi ha insegnato che la **natura a volte può essere violenta e pericolosa**. Tuttavia, sono molto colpita da come i **cittadini** di Gemona siano **dotati di estrema resilienza** e siano stati in grado di rimettere in piedi tutto quello che era stato distrutto. Un luogo incantevole e ricco di storia che **merita sicuramente una visita**!
