This week's theme for the Olio di Balena contest is truly interesting: "**The strangest, most beautiful, or unforgettable vacation I've ever had**”. We are talking about a decentralized contest where users themselves vote for the winning posts. When I read the title of the theme, **I immediately thought of 2018, the year I took my first vacation with my boyfriend** (now my future husband, it feels strange to say!).
The main problem was our **limited budget**, because we were both studying at university and working low-paying odd jobs (I was a waitress, he was a personal trainer at the gym). So we had to opt for an **extremely low-cost vacation**!

Il tema di questa settimana del contest Olio di Balena è veramente interessante: “**La vacanza più strana, bella o indimenticabile che ho vissuto**”. Quando ho letto il titolo del tema, **ho subito pensato al 2018, l’anno in cui ho fatto la prima vacanza con il mio fidanzato** (oggi futuro marito, mi fa strano dirlo!).
Il problema fondamentale era il **budget scarso**, perché entrambi studiavamo all’università e facevamo lavoretti saltuari poco remunerativi (io la cameriera, lui il personal trainer in palestra). Quindi abbiamo dovuto optare per una **vacanza estremamente low cost**!

**We spent only €500 for two weeks**, or €125 per person per week!
But how did we do it?
- We chose a **destination close to home**: a tour of the **Marche region**, just a few hours' drive away;
- Rather than booking a hotel with all the comforts, we opted for an **apartment** in the heart of the Marche hills, in a small village yet extremely well connected to the main attractions, through Airbnb;
- As for meals, we were lucky enough to find an apartment where **breakfast was included**, with fruit juice, pastries, coffee, sandwiches, and everything we could wish for! **Lunch and dinner were cooked by me**, keeping our shopping simple but complete and balanced. We only indulged in pizza twice at a restaurant;
- To visit museums and places of interest, we purchased a **regional card** that allowed entry to **all the main tourist attractions** and offered a significant discount for students under 30. This way, we were able to see gems like Urbino, Pesaro, Gradara, Fabriano, Senigallia, and more, paying only a few euros;
- We opted for the **public beach**, bringing our own umbrella and lounge chairs. Luckily, Marche is a region with very wide and clean public beaches, so it wasn't difficult to find space to spend the day.
Pensate che **abbiamo speso solamente 500 euro per due settimane**, ovvero 125 euro a testa a settimana!
Ma come abbiamo fatto?
- Abbiamo scelto una **meta vicino a casa**: un tour della regione Marche, a poche ore di auto;
- Anziché prenotare hotel nel pieno delle comodità, abbiamo optato per un **appartamento** nel cuore delle colline marchigiane, in un piccolo paesino ma collegato estremamente bene con i principali luoghi di interesse, attraverso Airbnb;
- Per quanto riguarda i pasti, abbiamo avuto la fortuna di trovare un appartamento dove la **colazione era inclusa**, con succhi di frutta, brioche, caffè, panini e tutto quello che potevamo desiderare! **Il pranzo e la cena erano cucinati da me**, facendo una spesa semplice ma completa e bilanciata. Solamente 2 volte ci siamo concessi una pizza al ristorante;
- Per visitare i musei e i luoghi di interesse, abbiamo acquistato una **card regionale** che consentiva di entrare in **tutti i principali punti turistici** e c’era un forte sconto per gli studenti sotto i 30 anni di età. In questo modo, abbiamo potuto vedere gioielli come Urbino, Pesaro, Gradara, Fabriano, Senigallia, … pagando solamente qualche euro;
- Abbiamo optato per la **spiaggia libera**, portandoci il nostro ombrellone e gli sdrai da casa. Fortunatamente, le Marche sono una regione dove la spiaggia libera è molto ampia e pulita, quindi non è stato difficile trovare spazio per passare la giornata.

Despite these limitations, which some might find excessive, it was **one of the most unforgettable vacations** of my life.
First of all, because it was **our first vacation as a couple**, so it was fun to experience life as a couple outside of the routine. Simple tasks like grocery shopping, cooking, and strolling along the seafront brought us together as a couple and allowed us to **discover new sides of ourselves**.
Furthermore, **Marche region was a real discovery**, as it boasts truly stunning, uncrowded landscapes. Many prefer to visit Italy's most famous cities like Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, etc., but **Italy has many small towns** that reflect the region and demonstrate how beautiful this peninsula is, from north to south, from the inland villages to the sea.
Nonostante queste limitazioni, che per alcune persone potrebbero sembrare eccessive, è stata **una delle vacanze più indimenticabili** della mia vita.
Innanzitutto, perché era la **prima vacanza da fidanzati**, e quindi è stato divertente fare la vita di coppia al di fuori della routine. Azioni semplici come fare la spesa, cucinare, passeggiare sul lungomare, ci hanno unito come coppia e ci hanno fatto **scoprire nuovi lati di noi stessi**.
Inoltre, la **regione Marche è stata una vera e propria scoperta**, perché ci sono dei paesaggi davvero meravigliosi e poco turistici. Molti preferiscono andare nelle città italiane più famose come Roma, Firenze, Venezia, Milano, … ma **in Italia ci sono tante piccole realtà** che raccontano il territorio e che fanno capire come questa penisola sia bellissima, da nord a sud, dai paesini dell’entroterra fino al mare.

I'm ending this post on a sour note, because I realized that **nowadays I think it would be impossible to repeat the same vacation at these prices**, due to inflation and the general increase in the cost of living. A €50 food expense in 2018 would have provided you with enough for a whole week, but now you need to at least double that.
However, **I'd love to return one day to visit these places**, to see how they've changed over time and to have some experiences that we weren't able to have this time due to budget constraints.

Concludo questo post con una nota amara, perché mi sono resa conto che **al giorno d’oggi penso sarebbe impossibile rifare la stessa vacanza a questi prezzi**, per colpa dell’inflazione e dell’aumento generale del costo della vita. Una spesa alimentare di 50 euro nel 2018 ti permetteva di avere cibo per tutta la settimana, adesso, invece, bisogna almeno raddoppiare le disponibilità.
Tuttavia, **mi piacerebbe ritornare un giorno a visitare questi luoghi**, per vedere come si sono modificati nel tempo e fare alcune esperienze che in questa occasione non siamo riusciti a fare per colpa del budget.
