On one of my recent trips exploring the Italian peninsula, I stumbled upon a city that's often overlooked but is truly breathtakingly beautiful. I'm talking about **Gallipoli**, in the Puglia region of southern Italy.
This area is famous for its **crystal-clear sea**. The azure panorama stretches as far as the eye can see, and it's impossible not to take a few photos! The name Gallipoli, in fact, derives from the **Greek "Kale polis," meaning "beautiful city”**.

In uno dei miei recenti viaggi alla scoperta della penisola italiana, mi sono imbattuta in una città che viene poco valorizzata ma che invece è di grande bellezza. Sto parlando di **Gallipoli**, nella regione Puglia, sud Italia.
Questo territorio è famoso soprattutto per il suo **mare cristallino**. L’azzurro del panorama si perde a vista d’occhio ed è impossibile non scattare qualche foto! Il nome Gallipoli, infatti, deriva dal **greco “Kale polis”, ovvero “città bella”**.

Puglia is a very important region for olive oil production. Olive oil is so important in this region that it's called "**liquid gold**".
In Gallipoli, there's a beautiful **underground olive oil mill**, recently renovated. It dates back to the 17th century and covers approximately **200 square meters**. A unique gem!
La Puglia è una regione molto importante per la produzione di olio. L’olio d’oliva è talmente importante in questa regione che viene chiamato **“oro liquido**”.
A Gallipoli esiste un bellissimo **frantoio ipogeo**, che è stato recentemente ristrutturato. Risale al 1600 e si estende per circa **200 metri quadri**. Un gioiello unico al mondo!

Apulian olive oil was famous throughout Europe because it was what allowed European cities to have lighting. Paris, London, Berlin, and Amsterdam, in fact, all used **oil lamps** in their nightlife.
Olive oil was also used in **cosmetics**, to make soap, and, of course, in **cooking**.
L’olio pugliese era famoso in tutta Europa, perché era quello che permetteva alle città europee di avere l’illuminazione. Parigi, Londra, Berlino e Amsterdam, infatti, utilizzavano tutte le **lampade a olio** nella loro vita notturna.
L’olio d’oliva veniva anche utilizzato nella **cosmetica**, per fare saponi, e ovviamente in **cucina**.
