I suppose some might argue that I just "lack imagination," but it seems to me there is an absolutely mindbending volume of pure lunacy in the world.
I wonder if it's a reflection of the fact that our modern world is so genuinely difficult and heartbreaking to navigate that it inspires (or forces?) people to latch onto various theories (or "realities") that have not the tiniest shred of reality-based evidence to back them up. Or maybe people are just so bored that they choose to explore the implausible, purely for attention and shock value.
I don't have to go very far to find lots of it. Heck, it arrives daily when I go through my morning email, and my Facebook messages from ostensible "friends." They share all sorts of stuff — often with a great deal of enthusiasm — that makes me wonder just what kind of Koolaid they have been drinking.
They used to be sane.
At the end up it, I end up scratching my head and wondering "How did you even COME UP with this???"
Sometimes it's about aliens having a secret base inside Mount Shasta, at others it's about a secret banking organization crashing and taking over the monetary system... overnight, and without anyone knowing about it. Just this morning, someone sent me a clip about some "black ops" organization having siezed $97 trillion from some kind of evil shadow government.
Consequently, my second thought is just the simple question of whether anyone actually checks the veracity of the stories they are sharing. Have you even considered $97 trillion in any kind of context? Whatever happened to critical thinking?
Of course, even critical thinking has become a bit sketchy. As in, critical thinking has often been replaced by people instead attacking and discrediting those who fact check them. Of course, it seems that we are living in an age of "subjective facts."
As I recall, the term "alternative facts" was coined around the time of the initial Covid outbreak.
The world no longer trades in "Truth and Lies," but in "Facts and Alternative Facts."
I'm not sure how things got to be that way, but it seems like many people — including those in positions of power and influence — have become unwilling to accept any "version" of reality that doesn't accommodate their pre-determined narrative.
Like firing people who publish statistics because you don't like the numbers they report...
I suppose I ponder — and write about — these things because they seem like a kind of clown show that scares me.
Even those who operate under the guise of such statements as "the facts don't care about your feelings" often depend on alarmingly subjective facts to base their platforms on.
As a species, have we just grown completely intolerant of being disagreed with? Somehow, that doesn't bode well for our future...
I'm open to the possibility that life has always had such dystopian undertones... and we just didn't know about it, because there was no Internet, no YouTube, no Tiktok to immediately turn the latest rumor into a circus act.
It still scares me, though...
