Die bekannte Elite-Uni Harvard hat im zweiten Quartal eine beträchtliche Bitcoin-Position aufgebaut. Harvard ist aber nicht die einzige „Ivy League“-Universität, die auf Bitcoin setzt. Auch die Brown University kaufte im vergangenen Quartal Bitcoin-Spot-ETFs.
Aus dem gestern gemeldeten 13F-Filing für das zweite Quartal geht hervor, dass Harvard zum Stichtag des 30. Juni 1.906.000 Anteile des Bitcoin-Spot-ETFs von BlackRock (IBIT) im Gegenwert von mehr als 116 Millionen US-Dollar gehalten hat.
In dem öffentlichen einsehbaren Teil des Harvard-Portfolios, das mehr als 1 Milliarde US-Dollar an Wertpapieren beinhaltet, entfallen rund 8 Prozent auf Bitcoin. Harvard hält sogar mehr Bitcoin als Gold.
Da der Bitcoin-Kurs seit dem Ende des zweiten Quartals weiter gestiegen ist, sind die 1.906.000 IBIT-Anteile von Harvard inzwischen rund 10 Millionen US-Dollar mehr wert.
Ob Harvard im dritten Quartal weiter nachlegt, wird sich spätestens Mitte Oktober zeigen.
Die Brown University wies erstmals im ersten Quartal dieses Jahres eine 5 Millionen US-Dollar schwere Bitcoin-Position aus. Im zweiten Quartal vergrößerte die Elite-Uni den IBIT-Bestand von 105.000 auf 212.500 Anteile, die zum 30. Juni mehr als 13 Millionen US-Dollar wert waren.
Bloomberg-ETF-Experte Eric Balchunas kommentierte die Meldungen zu den Elite-Unis, indem er darauf aufmerksam machte, dass Harvard mit dieser Position derzeit der 29.-größte Halter von IBIT ist. Außerdem seien diese Positionen besonders, da Stiftungen generell eher selten ETFs kaufen würden.
Die Emory University wurde im dritten Quartal vergangenen Jahres zur ersten Universität, deren Stiftung in Bitcoin investiert hat. Damit war es erstmals der Fall, dass Institutionen jeder Art Bitcoin-Spot-ETFs hielten – von Versicherern über Pensions- und Hedgefonds bis hin zu Stiftungen.
Dass renommierte Universitäten auf Bitcoin setzen, könnte dazu führen, dass die immer noch weitverbreitete Annahme, hauptsächlich ungebildete und naive Kleinanleger würden Bitcoin halten, zunehmend hinterfragt wird.
Die umgerechnete BTC-Position von Harvard liegt bei 1.100 Bitcoin im Wert von knapp 177 Millionen US-Dollar. Damit ist BTC nach Microsoft, Amazon, Booking Holdings und Meta die fünftgrößte Einzelinvestition der Universität in diesem Zeitraum. Zusätzlich besitzt Harvard Anteile am Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust.
Übrigens: Die Harvard University investiert, um ihr Stiftungsvermögen langfristig zu sichern und durch Renditen ihre Bildungs- und Forschungsarbeit zu finanzieren. Mit einem Gesamtvermögen von rund 53 Milliarden US-Dollar führt Harvard die Rangliste der wohlhabendsten Universitäten weltweit an.

The well-known elite university Harvard built a significant Bitcoin position in the second quarter. However, Harvard isn't the only Ivy League university to invest in Bitcoin. Brown University also purchased Bitcoin spot ETFs last quarter.
The second-quarter 13F filing reported yesterday reveals that Harvard held 1,906,000 shares of BlackRock's Bitcoin spot ETF (IBIT), valued at more than $116 million, as of June 30.
In the publicly accessible portion of Harvard's portfolio, which includes more than $1 billion in securities, Bitcoin accounts for approximately 8 percent. Harvard even holds more Bitcoin than gold.
As the price of Bitcoin has continued to rise since the end of the second quarter, Harvard's 1,906,000 IBIT shares are now worth around $10 million more.

The fact that renowned universities are embracing Bitcoin could lead to increasing questioning of the still widespread assumption that Bitcoin is primarily held by uneducated and naive retail investors.
Harvard's converted BTC position is 1,100 Bitcoin, valued at nearly $177 million. This makes BTC the university's fifth-largest single investment during this period, after Microsoft, Amazon, Booking Holdings, and Meta. Harvard also owns shares in the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust.
By the way: Harvard University invests to secure its endowment for the long term and to finance its educational and research work through returns. With total assets of around $53 billion, Harvard leads the ranking of the wealthiest universities in the world.
