Yesterday was so insightful, for me anyway. I got to meet with the woman. The meeting was almost postponed again (not on my part) but against all odds, we met and we talked. Well, she talked, I listened and took some notes. She gave ideas, suggestions and also some Dos & Don’ts.
First, she showed me what her chicken pen was like. She rears two kinds of chickens. Broilers and Noilers. The festive season is approaching and so, now is the time to raise chickens to sell.

Her Broilers are about two weeks and the Noilers seven weeks. They looked huge! I couldn’t get a clear picture because from what I was told, opening that cage could lead to chaos. The Broilers will be sold in the festive season, so will the Noilers but for now, before she properly goes into Egg farming, she uses the Noilers. They also lay eggs, just not as efficient as the Layers.
She listed the advantages of Noilers to me, which I had highlighted in my post [here](https://ecency.com/hive-11060/@deraaa/chickchick-egg-farming-layers-vs-noilers).Then she went on to suggest ways I can effectively rear my layers. Though she doesn’t have all the knowledge about Layers because she hasn’t gone into egg farming yet, she knows enough about feeding and housing to give her two cents.
I presented the idea of buying in colonies with the goal of getting the eggs. She mentioned that while that is great, I would be ripped off. She explained how buying chickens at 5 months is worth more than 6,000 per unit. Case in point, 2 months old chickens are sold for N25,000 per one. So, I would only be able to afford 6 or less.
On the other hand, she suggested that I can still start small scale by buying 30 of the layer chicks for N48,000 and then sending the rest of N102,000 into their feeding for that five months. She suggested the kinds of lights I would use, also made mention of sawdust as a heating agent from the floor.

If you look at the pictures, you see the saw dust. She also mentioned that Five months chickens, no matter the breed eat more than I have planned for. She suggested that I also plan for the heating to be more fool proof. She spoke of Tapolyns, lights and the coals. She said I already had a good plan laid out but I would still learn as I grow them.
She made mention of something else but of course, I and my partner had an agreement which I will not breach. I didn’t tell her that though but she suggested I also raise broilers as they are less expensive and sell them during the festive seasons then use the money to really take care of my layers since I’m mostly going into egg farming. She said since I was starting on a small scale, this would be beneficial for me as I won’t have to worry about feeding in the process or medication if need be. I would have emergency funds.
She said every egg farmer she knows in Kaduna also rears broilers for the money to put into the egg market which is more capital intensive. She said the broilers provide money for taking care of the Noilers which provide her with eggs. But now that she wants to take it more seriously, she would have to get Layers and she plans to use the same system.

I thought that was a good idea but, unless my partner is okay with it, I won’t be implementing it. A deal is a deal. Moving forward, she made mention of the feed. I asked her if she has a more effective way of feeding them rather than the normal feed. This she replied that she used the normal feed just that she lets them eat twice as normal. Which is basically the standard. At two weeks and their butts are as big as my hand. Nice looking butts…
Alright! Moving forward, I think she’s right in getting day old chicks for that price. Bags of feed range from 17,000-21,000 depending on type ([check this post](https://ecency.com/hive-11060/@deraaa/chickchick-egg-farming-the-planning-stages-kfh)) and I can buy 4-5 bags of feed. I can also properly monitor their progress and time frame of feeding. Just like she suggested. In her words, if we would expand later on, why not just begin from scratch and gain the experience to build bigger rather than jumping the gun? Of course, I would like to know what you think.

She also said that housing should be taken care of meticulously. Case instances of chickens moved from their nest due to negligence was brought up and boy, that did strike fear in my heart. But I am determined to take my time with this and made a move that I can’t disclose here yet. Hopefully, I can strike a deal with these people and if it works out, you’d be reading about it in the next update. Until then, have a blessed weekend!
