The place is ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, one of the most visitid museums in Scandinavia. It is located in the city center of Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark. The iconic rainbow on the top of the museum has become a hallmark of Aarhus. The rainbow is a spectacular masterpiece placed on top of the building. You can see it from a long distance. The colors makes this work function as a compass. They differs according to where you are in the city. When standing underneath the rainbow, it seems to float in the air. From the rainbow itself or the roof terrace there is an amazing view of the city.
The museum has ten floors. Some exhibitions are permanent. Others are temporary. I visited all the floors and explored some of the exhibitions. There is a lot of interesting stuff here, so it is easy to spend the day.
On the 6th floor is the ARoS Collection: 1960 - Now. What impressed me here is this huge statue of a boy. This piece of work is called «Boy». It is impressive in realism and size. I tried to take a photo without other people around. But then the man appeared from behind just as I was taking the photo. I chose this photo for the post, as it says a lot about the size. The artist is Ron Muech. Mueck is known for creating meticulously crafted sculptures like this boy. The details are intricate and the size is exaggerated in scale.
Exciting installations in dark rooms that make you afraid to go in. Music from a piano, while you move around it. Mirrors make what you see change of what the piono keys look like.
Alexander Tovborgs «Savior of the World»
At the bottom floor I found the exhibition «Divine Comedy» with work by Alexander Tovborg absolutely interesting (24.02.25-04.01.26). Tovborg's explores how religion and mythology shape us and the world around us. His exhibition is inspired by Dante Alighieri's comedy of the same name. Written between 1308-1321, Dante describes a journey through the 3 realms of death. A journey from hell to paradise. This exhibition has a lot of paintings that show portraits of the church. But with no doors. Lots of human faces. He asks questions like "who is being locked in" and "who is being locked out". His paintings are a visual commentary on the debate about inclusion and exclusion.
I end up at the top of the building to enjoy the view of Aarhus in colors. Your rainbow panorama - The rainbow – does give a feeling of floating when walking here. The view of the city is amazing. If you know the city, you can spot the Cathedral and other known buildings. You will see the city in different colors.
The artist behind this installation is Olafur Eliasson's. He is a Danish/Icelandic artist. His coloful artwork certainly does soars high above the rooftops. This huge piece of art is a circular walkway with a length of 150 meters and 3 meters wide, made of colored glass. A walk here gives a 360-degree view of Aarhus.
After taking a walk inside, I also took a walk on the roof terrace. On a warm summer day you can take place in one of the seating areas. It was too cold to do that when I was here. I must admit. The Rainbow was a real highlight of my visit.
