In a street called Tiendeladen in the city center of Aalborg, you will find this interesting work. The artist is Spear, a Belgian artist, based in Brussels. The title is «From Tithe to Taxes». To understand the painting, the artist had a history lesson about this particular place. I think the artist has done a beautiful painting, where he has conveyed the unique history of this area and combined it with the issue of taxation.
The area is called "Tiendeladen" which means "tithe barn". This barn was a place of storage. The farmers back in the 16th century brought their natural goods as tithe. This was a kind of tax they hat do pay to the church. They payed with crops. Look at the painting and see how the inclusion of aspects from the past is very obvious in this mural. Spear has, as a starting point taken the long history of Tiendeladen into account and adapted his painting to this.
Notice how the object is divided in two conveing two different views on tithe (taxation). By painting directly on site where the historic tithe barn was located, he has said that he wanted a conversation about taxation and the role it has today. Look at the left side. You see a hand that seems to secretly taking some grain from what looks like an almost empty sack. The flowers above are dead. This symbolizes missuse of resources. The other half of the mural shows a jar purring grain. The jar is transparent and has flourising flowers above. The transparent jar is a symbol of openess when it comes to management of ressources, something that nurtures a democracy.
Spear ( Corentin Binard) was born in 1988 in Brussels. As far as I have managed to find out, he is a graffiti artist who travelled the world, painting a number of murals in at least 20 countries on different continents. During his travels, he became aware of social inequality in the world. His travels were an eye opener on living conditions around the world. This made him question both values and lifestyle. Through his artistic work, he has found a way of sharing his thoughts. They often carry social messages.
To me this is one of the most interesting murals so far in Aalborg.
