When I was in Denmark (Aalborg) in October, I took a day trip to Aarhus. It was primarily to go to the art museum, ARoS. I did have a couple of hours to walk the streets before taking the train back to Aalborg. On my walk through the old historic part of town and to the harbor front, made me discover some gorgeous murals. Aarhus is famous for a project known as 17 Walls. There are 17 murals placed throughout the city's old town and these are based on the UN's 17 sustainability goals. Because I wasn't prepared, I only accidently passed three of them.
The city of Aarhus
The founders of project «17 Walls» has had a purpose when they started. Each one of the 17 murals illustrate each of the 17 UN Sustainable Developement Goals. In this way these SDGs will be accessible to everyone. Hopefully these free work of art will create a common identity that might motivate us to work for a sustainability future. The founders of the project believe that art can inspire in ways words can't. The artists involved in the project come from different countries. This was done becouse SDGs is a matter that affects the whole globe.
«On our way»
Artist: Telmomiel (The Netherlands)
This huge mural was the first of the 17 walls to be painted. Inspired by the Global goal nr.17: «Partnerships for the goals».

The mural shows children who walk towards the future. They also walk in the same direction – towards the future. Each of them is carrying a bird. Telmomiel chose birds as a symbol of mother nature. The children bring nature with them into the future. Because they wanted the focus to be on the new generation (who are the future), they chose to portray children. The title solso indicate the start of the journey and the start of this generations walking in the same ( right) direction.

The Dutch duo who call themselves Telmomiel, composes of Telmo Pieper and Miel Krutzmann. Since 2012 they have been working together. They paint in a realistic style. They met and became to know each other at an art academy in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2007. Telmo was an illustrator. Miel was into the art of graffiti and practised spray painting. As they started to work together the have developed and is today an ambitious artistic duo.
«Mirror»
Artist: Fintan Magee (Australia)
This mural is done by Fintan Magee and is inspired by Global Goal nr.13: «Climate action».
A girl is looking at her own reflection. The plants she is holding, is an allegory for change and better times. The artist highlightens the collective responsibility we have when it comes to taking care of nature, preserving drinking water and the importance of ensuring sources of clean energy. The way this work is painted, gives an illusion of the imange beeing reflected in water. It symbolises how urgent action around climate change is. Flooding has become an increasing risk. How are we to understand the image? The girl is either above or consumed by the water....

Fintan Magee is an Australian artist, born in 1985 in New South Wales. He is a prominent painter, known for his realistic murals. Most of his work has to do with environmental issues and endangered animals. But in some of his work, he also includes themes that touched social issues.
"Right Trough My Fingers"
Artist: BKFOXX ( USA)
The last of the 17 murals I came across, is inspired by Global Goal nr.14: «Life Below Water».
These two hands submerged into water, is the artist own hands. She has her hands in the ocean on Miami Beach, USA. The hands represents the responsibility we have to the ocean. The ocean is literaly in our hands. The artist wants the focus to be on harmony and coexistance with the ocean. That's why the hands are positioned this way; open, without holding anything.

The artist was born in 1988 in New York City. She is an artist who uses only spray paint, no brushes when she is creating her photorealistic work. n 2013 she became interested in spraypainting. She startet to paint on old, abondened buildings in New York City. When she starts, she usually to that by photographing a scene she has set up. Her aim is to move people emotionally and make us aware of what surround us.
Even though there are 17 UNs 17 sustainable goals and 17 artworks, there is only 1 globe.
