Walking the North Sea Trail, Denmark – Hirtshals to Tversted

We are now walking our fouth day of The North Sea trail. From now on we change direction. Until now we have being walking straight north. Since Hirtshals is located in a corner, we followed the coast from west to east from now on. The route started on a paved road, to get out of Hirtshals. Then we came to the forest and the plantations. Not far from Tversted we crossed Uggerby Å, a stream that meets the sea here. Even though we didn't see any canoes, I know it is popular stream to for canoing. This day was the shortes day hike – only 18 kilometers – which gave us time to enjoy the landscape. When we reach Tversted, we hit the main road from the beach to our apartment for the night – Tannishus apartment hotel.






 Shelter

The first part follows a forest path for quite a while, before we crossed farmland and the dune plantation called Lilleheden. We took a break at the shelter. It is possible to overnight here, if you have a sleepingbag. There are facilities for outdoor cooking and watersupply, so we filled our water bottles. It is not the first time we see shelters. They are placed along the trail, offering free sleeping. Along the way we made several stops to pick wild berries once again. This was the high season. We even picked some to bring with us. They were really a treat on our oat meal porridge in the morning.




Forest trails and gravel roads dominate the terrain we are now walking on, until we reach Uggerby Å. At times we could glimpse the sea, which was never far away from us. It was almost possible to smell the sea, because of the salty air. Very refreshing.





At last we are approching Tversted. This place is Uggerby Å. Incredibly beautiful and green landscape. Fortunately there is a bridge. It is curved, so that it allows canoeists to get under. After we cross the bridge, we follow the stream approximately to its outlet.






It doesn't take long before we follow the path on a raised footpath. The path is sandy, but easy to walk. The last stretch before we reach Tannushus / Tversted, is on the sandy beach. We were led dirrectly to the only road that leads to the town itself. Since we left Hune and started our six day walk, we have experienced varied landscapes, historical places and small fishing villages. Part of the trail follows partly old roads, like church and royal paths that leads to historical places of interest. Each of our days we also walked quite a few kilometers along a stretch of beach. A bath in the sea was absolutely a refreshing experience!

Then we reached Tannisby / Tversted, which is a small community with only a few hundred inhabitants. It seemed quiet and relaxed, but rather charming. Only a few shops were open, but I quess it's because it was off season. We stayed at the apartment hotel Tannishus. It turned out that during WWII it was used by the German military. The receptionist said, that after the war it functioned as a refugee camp. Could be there is a lot more to be told about the place. This was another day when we had decided that we would have dinner outside insted of cooking ourselves. I. We had been told that Tversted has an excellent restaurant with beer from it's own brewery. Cafe Fisk definitely had good fish and excellent beer. It was worth going out for dinner. The next day we continued from Tversted to Bunken trainstation and Skagen. This stretch has spectacular landscape I wouldn't have thought I would find in Denmark! After spending the night in the city of Skagen, we walk to Grenen. This is the very top of Denmark, where two oceans meet and the ending point of our North Sea walk. To be continued in a few days. Link to my previous post from The North Sea Trail:
