From a distance, the sound of Acehnese percussion instruments pierced the silence of the night. The Rapa'i is one of Aceh's legendary percussion instruments. Its thunderous sound, carried by the night breeze when played, creates an extraordinary allure. Hearing it, your soul struggles, searching for the source of the sound.
We call it "Piasan Malam," because the people of Aceh's villages are still looking for entertainment, choosing to play Rapa'i rather than head to the hustle and bustle of the city, 3 to 4 kilometers away from their village.
The thunderous sound of the Rapa'i reached those of us in the city, and several friends and I immediately headed there. There was an evening arts event in the village. Upon arrival, two groups were already preparing to compete in playing the Rapa'i.
I tried to capture some images and make them as entries in this Monomad Challenge. Hopefully these images will get support from friends in the Black and White community.
In this Monomad Challenge contest, I want to invite my friends to see some of Black and White photos caught by my camera; "Piasan Malam", the pictures presented to my friends in Black and white Community ๐
And lastly, I've included a YouTube video of the Rapa'i rhythm being played during Piasan Malam. I hope you enjoy it.
