That night, I received calling from my friend @my451r; there was a Rapai Uroh and Debus performance in a village of town. I told him I'd come, and he picked me up at my satay stall. We rode a motorcycle, and it only took us five minutes to get there.
Rapai Uroh is a traditional Acehnese art form featuring the playing of the rapai (drum) instrument in groups of at least 10 people, but up to a maximum of 30. The Rapai is a traditional Acehnese percussion instrument made from special wood and skin of the animal (usually cowhide), shaped like a tambourine. This art form is also known as Rapai Daboh or Rapai Pase, and is often associated with religious and metaphysical elements (Debus).
As soon as we arrived, @my451r and I approached the competition area. The event featured two Rapai teams competing in their skill, percussion and debus. This art form originated in North Aceh of Aceh province, particularly on the east coast, and has growing rapidly there. Rapai Uroh is often associated with religious and metaphysical elements (invulnerability), where the performers, particularly the caliphs, demonstrate dexterity and invulnerability to sharp objects while following the rhythm of the percussion
Rapai Uroh is played by striking with hands and is usually performed in groups of at least 10 people and more, led by a caliph. We observed the preparations of the two groups before the event began; the performers were busy demonstrating their instruments. The sound of the beats was palpable in both ears, shattering the silence of the night, which had already reached 11:30 PM.
Today, this art form continues to be preserved by the Acehnese people, both through cultural activities and in-depth studies of its history and playing techniques. The elders mingled with the beginners, as if preparing to transmit a traditional art form that is becoming increasingly rare to be found it.
I tried to capture some images and make them as entries in this Monomad Challenge. Hopefully these images will get support from friends in the Black and White community.
In this Monomad Challenge contest, I want to invite my friends to see some of Black and White photos caught by my camera; "Rapai Uroh and Daboh (Preparing Team)", the pictures presented to my friends in Black and white Community ๐
