I tried this new character design challenge called the Codex Nocturna. It is an interesting portrait creation kind of drawing challenge for 30 days. I will give this first prompt a try first and go from there.
This is the stone gargoyle referred to in the design prompts. Perched on a plinth like guarding something could be holding a key the color and texture is slate grey and basalt texture with green moss or patina on the eyes or mouth. I think I was able to show some of those on my creation.
I started with an existing drawing I made previously but I only used the background like you see here
I outline the figure of the gargoyle I am thinking it is placed somewhere in a garden that was never tended. I want it to hold a key and the stance something I would never do. Reason I said that is my character looks like descending from a step but I liked it.
Here is a line drawing to show the form of my gargoyle. Some parts of this stone cracked and some are already chipped that is my idea.
The colors are limited to grey slate for the stone look , verdigris for the patina on the mouth and nose and eye then some yellow ochre for some highlights.
Initially I was already good with this warm reddish tone on the background but the green I like more and switched to it at the end.
