I’m staying with some friends in KatiKati a small town on New Zealand’s north island Bay of Plenty. Located 30km south of Waihi on route 2.
The town is know as the avocado capital and with in the middle of the avocado and kiwi fruit growing area but this isn't what the towns is most famous for. Back in the 90s the start of an out door art project and since then it has snowballed into over 80 murals on the sides of buildings throughout the town.
This morning I dodged the showers and took a walk round the town and took a few photos you can get a map from the art centre but I didn’t find that out till later so I’ve probably missed a few.
Most of them have small poster with an explanation on the subject of the mural and the artist.
Some of the subjects are of historical events.
While others are more amusing subjects.
I found this one very interesting viewed for the rear of the Talisman Bar it looks as if people a viewing the painting.
This one if near the town war memorial.
and depicts an ANZC soldier of the First World War.
This one depicts the inside of the original town garage.
Early in the towns history logging was one of the main industry’s.
Some of the local schools have also got in on the act with their own paintings.
This painting won a competition in 2006 and depicts the stage coach during the early years of New Zealand.
The paintings story is here.
Finally Hivers here are a the last few of the photos I took on my art walk around KatiKati town.
