On the second day of walking, I see a building in the distance, which seems quite imposing. _ Is that where we're going ? In this castle ? _ Yes, but it's a monastery.... _ Ah... and, therefore, it is the monks who know where the sword is ? _ They probably knew, but there's no one here anymore. _ Is it abandoned ? _ Yes, because of the history of the place.... Everyone usually avoids it, nowadays. _ What do you mean, the history of the place ? What happened ? "
Lijdel sighs.
_ Overall, we know what happened only because of one of the helpers who fled. There was... a young monk, who had just joined the Order. He had many ideas to develop the Liturgies, to transform the activity of the monastery, he wanted to revolutionize everything. It pleased the Guardian of the Order, who took it under his wing, and... probably for other types of relationships than purely liturgical, if you know what I mean. Obviously, this did not please other monks ; those, conservatives, who did not want to see the principles of the Order evolve, those who were ousted from their proximity to the Guardian of the Order... Others, on the contrary, took the side of the Guardian, or the young monk. So, from argument to meeting, things slowly got out of hand, with several factions pitting one against the other. Until some, the most virulent, came to blows. The Guardian then wanted to set an example and calm the spirits : he used the cellars of the monastery as a dungeon and locked up the most militant monks who dared to challenge his authority. Except that it didn't calm the spirits, on the contrary.... And it became so conflictual that one night a faction of monks tried to murder all the others in their sleep, one by one. But some monks had been warned, they retaliated. It was a massacre. Those who didn't kill themselves, ran away. And in all this... forgetting those who had been locked in the cellars, who all took several days to die. Some had started digging the walls with their fingernails.... _ Wow..... And... and do we really have to get in there now ? _ The sword was secured here 500 years ago. And a priori, it is still there. So, yes, we really need to get in there !"
Lijdel says these last words with a big smile. I'm not smiling at all.
