Pokemon TCG Pocket - Thoughts On Mega Pokemon ex Debut In Fall

It has been announced that Mega Pokemon ex make a debut in the Pokemon TCG Pocket mobile game. As Mega Pokemon ex make a return in late September 2025 in the regular trading card game, it makes sense to have Mega Pokemon ex in the Pocket game.

Whenever a Mega Pokemon ex is Knocked out, the opponent gets 3 points. You need 3 points in the Pocket game to win. Knocking out a Mega Pokemon ex results in a win.

Mega Gyarados ex

Mega Gyarados ex is a bulky Stage 1 Pokemon that evolves from Magikarp. This has a retreat cost of 3 and Lightning weakness.

The Mega Blaster attack is costly but if you do meet the attack requirements, this attack does 140 damage. In addition to the damage, you get to discard the top 3 cards of your opponent's deck. In the Pocket game, deck discarding is pretty powerful as there are not too many recovery cards in the game. In theory, you can win with this attack alone as you can deck out (or mill) the opponent and the opponent may not have an attacker that can threaten Mega Gyarados ex.

A major weakness with this Mega Gyarados ex is not the Gyarados itself. It is the 30 HP Magikarp. The 30 HP Magikarps are very vulnerable.

Mega Blaziken ex

Mega Blaziken ex is the evolved form of Combusken and the final form of Torchic. The Torchic and Combusken cards are unknown.

This Mega Blaziken ex has a bulky 210HP, 1 retreat cost and Water weakness. The single attack of Mega Burning requires 2 Fire Energy to deal 120 damage. After this attack, you must discard 1 Fire Energy from this Pokemon. Then you opponent's Active Pokemon is Burned. The total damage from this attack is 140 damage which is 120 + 20 burn damage.

Looking at this card alone, I think Mega Blaziken ex is an okay beatstick attacker. I would save this for the late game instead of rushing into this. Losing a Mega Pokemon ex results in an auto-win for the opponent.

Mega Altaria ex

Mega Altaria ex is the evolved form of Swablu. This Stage 1 Pokemon has 190 HP, 1 retreat cost and a weakness to Metal Pokemon attacks. The Mega Harmony attack requires 2 Psychic Energy for 40 base damage. This attack gets stronger if you have more Benched Pokemon. Mega Harmony does 30 more damage for each of your Benched Pokemon The maximum damage from this attack would be 130 (40 + 30 x 3 = 40 + 90).

I do get the feeling that people will try to use this Mega Altaria ex with the Sylveon ex draw engine. Both use Psychic Energy.

Prize Mapping With Mega Pokemon ex

There is high risk and high reward when it comes to using Mega Pokemon ex. The risk is that if your Mega Pokemon ex is Knocked out, your opponent gains 3 points and wins. The reward with Mega Pokemon ex is that they have lots of HP and stronger attacks compared to non Pokemon ex and regular Pokemon ex.

From the regular Pokemon TCG, there is a Prize Mapping concept. It is a planned attack strategy on deciding on which Pokemon to Knock out on your opponent's side. Before Mega Pokemon ex, you could do either:

  • 3 Knockouts on non Pokemon ex
  • 2 Knockouts on non Pokemon ex then 3rd and last Knockout on a Pokemon ex
  • 2 Knockouts on Pokemon ex only

With Mega Pokemon ex, you could force your opponent to knockout 2 non Pokemon ex for 2 points and play your Mega Pokemon ex as a final boss type of attacker.

Another strategy is to have your opponent Knock out your own Pokemon ex for 2 points. As the opponent needs one more point, you could play your Mega Pokemon ex as a final boss attacker here. Instead of having to risk a Mega Pokemon ex early on, make the opponent work harder by putting a regular Pokemon ex then play your Mega Pokemon ex.

The introduction of Mega Pokemon ex will shake things up. Those who are new to 3 Points Pokemon will find this concept kind of crazy. For me, I am neutral on Mega Pokemon and 3 Prize Pokemon. I was used to VMAX Pokemon from 2023 like Urshifu VMAX in the regular Pokemon TCG.
