Stephen King is a master when dealing with current issues and incorporating them into his twisted world which when really studied aren't that twisted after all. Who is the real monster in "Never Flinch?" If I had to guess, I would say the "Right-To-Lifers!" A deep issue that has been brought up in our society recently is the fact that a woman has the right to do what she wants with her body. When is it and is it at all okay to have an abortion anytime during a pregnancy? It appears in the case of this book that a certain group of "Right-To-Lifers" are the monsters in this story. After all, they are the ones that appear to have created Chris / Chrissy Stewart. Is the Frankenstein monster the real villain or Dr. Frankenstein?
Then there is the man who was framed to be a pedophile. He was convicted in a court of his peers and sent to prison. The real guilty party attempts to come forth but no one believes him. That is at least until the wrongly convicted party is shanked in prison. To make matters worse, a man referring to himself as Bill Wilson feels that innocent people should be killed to balance the scales for the innocent party that was killed in prison.
An activist for women's rights is currently stirring the pot through her controversial speaking engagements. Dealing with a stalker, she hires Holly Gibney as her bodyguard. Meanwhile, Holly is also helping out Detective Izzy Jaynes with the frequency of dead bodies that are being found. Throw in a world-renowned Gospel singer and King has created a hell of a story!
There is so much going on in this story but King quickly reverses the action landscape so that you don't forget any of the main characters. The way he brings the story together (no spoilers here!) is totally brilliant. I kept envisioning how this would play out as a full-length motion picture, coming to the conclusion that I would be first in line for tickets.
