Love is a beautiful thing, they say. Love is blind. So, if love is blind, I don’t even know how it has become a beautiful thing. Do you see the paradox? Some say love is not true, that love doesn’t exist, that love is a fairy tale. Some say love is magical. It makes your heart sway, sometimes it leaves you thinking left and right, sometimes it can confuse you, and the question you ask yourself is: Is love worth every second you spend your time on?
I want to take you on this special story. I’ve been in love once. I’ve been so much in love, once in a lifetime, where whenever I see the other person, I can’t stop smiling. Just take yourself back to where I met one of the loves of my life, who could not stop talking. We would talk for hours, and everything felt like dreams, a fantasy. It felt like we were the only ones in the world, and we were having a great time. I felt like coming alive when I was with this person because every day felt like an adventure. I had to keep racing every time we smiled at each other. Sometimes we went for outings, to a restaurant to eat and laugh and share with each other. We watched movies together, we talked together, and one of the important parts of love is that most of the ordinary things we do seem to be extraordinary because we dream with that person we are in love with.
But yes, I know love is also blind. Sometimes we do things out of love, even ones we cannot do on a normal day. So, I neglected the flaws of the other person. I was focused on her to the best, even though we were different in some of our beliefs. Love has a way of making us cut edges, making us move our boundaries and neglect some flaws, and make you see someone as being the best even when they are not perfect.
So, what was it like to love? Sometimes love feels like you’re flying and falling at the same time. Sometimes there are misunderstandings, and sometimes you feel butterflies in your belly. You feel some lovely moments, and sometimes you feel heartbreak. But it wasn’t all rosy and always as we know. Love is not perfect; it affects us and cannot be tamed in our today’s world. Love can make us vulnerable. Love can shatter us. Love can cause disagreement. Sometimes you give more than you are receiving. Sometimes you give too much of yourself, and you’re not receiving back from the love, but you still don’t mind. So, this love is about navigating both the highs and the lows.
If you’re thinking about finding love and you want to feel like love is the perfect thing, you have to keep opening your eyes. Love is beautiful, but it teaches you more about yourself. There’s a limit to your capacity to care. You don’t have to give yourself or lose yourself too much for love because you don’t know what the future might bring. Tomorrow might not be certain; you might not end up with your partner. So, what do you value? You have to communicate and not ignore those red flags because you are feeling the rush or your body is thrilling you at the moment.
Love is not the fairy tale you see in those Telemundo or soap opera movies. Love grows with time, with respect, with patience. So, will I say love is worth it? Yes, love is worth it, but don’t take it as a perfect scenario. Sometimes there are tough moments, sometimes there are happy moments. So, just embrace it and ride on and keep loving. That is how the world keeps going as we love each other, even irrespective of our imperfections.
