There are many festivals in my country. We are famous gourmets and we love to eat well. Today I will write to you about the festival of making homemade pies. My wife also makes them very well. And what better way to enjoy them than with a warm pie with yogurt. I love this festival because it preserves the old tradition of how our mothers and grandmothers used to make it.The festival was held a few days ago and the venue is very close to me, so I visited this event. My visit to the Festival in Medoševac remained in my special memory, because it was not an ordinary fair or a village gathering, but an event in which the main role is played by the housewives and their skills in making pies. I came in the morning, when everything was already ready. At the entrance to the village, I felt that something special was happening - cars parked on the side, people walking in groups and carrying bags, children running and looking forward to the crowd.
Stalls and tents were set up in the center of the village. You could buy everything there - from sweets and toys for children to honey, brandy and homemade products. I was passing by those stands, but my attention was drawn to the crowd at the big tent where the preparations for the pie mixing competition were already starting. On long tables, housewives stacked flour, rolled out rolling pins and prepared bowls with cheese, potatoes and greens. The smell was not felt yet, but one could guess what would happen there. The audience stood around the tables and watched as they deftly stretched the crusts. One woman said that she makes the pie the same way she learned from her mother, another added that the pie develops best when the dough is well rested. As I stood there watching, I noticed how much more it was than a competition. Each housewife wanted to show off her skills, but also to preserve tradition. The crusts were spread out on tablecloths, then placed in baking trays, greased with oil, and filled with filling. It was mostly cheese pies, but there were also potatoes and spinach pies.
Meanwhile, the ovens were heating up. As soon as the first pies started baking, a smell spread through the tent, attracting more and more people. When the first casseroles were ready, they were presented to the audience and the committee. The judges sat at a table and judged the pies on appearance, color of the crust, crispness and taste. Each hostess presented her own, and the committee tried it. The audience also had the opportunity to take a piece, and there was a real crowd. I also tried several types - each pie had its own taste, but they were all good. I liked the pie with cheese and homemade cream the most, because it had a special smell and a rich taste.
While all this was going on, the atmosphere was like a fair. Music was playing on the stage, people were playing carousel, and children were riding on the merry-go-round. Everyone found something for themselves. The older people sat under the tent, drank drinks and talked, while the younger ones waited for the real party to start with the music. After the evaluation, prizes were distributed. The best housewives received diplomas, and the audience rewarded them with applause. You could see that they were proud, even though the rewards were not big - recognition and respect were more important. As the day wore on, the pies disappeared and the fun continued. The music was getting louder, people were cheering. The village lived in a special rhythm that day, as if all problems were put aside and everything revolved around food, music and socializing. In the evening, the atmosphere was the liveliest. In front of the stage, a carousel was playing, young people were recording on their phones, and older people were singing from the audience. I sat on the side, ate another piece of pie and watched everyone around me. I thought that events like this show how important customs and community are, because they bring locals and guests together.
This festival is not just a pie-making competition, but an opportunity to show off the village, for people to come together and remember what it looks like when tradition lives on through socializing and food.
I hope I managed to describe these events in my country to you. Thanks for reading
