Today, I want to share a simple step about how I started planting spring onions on my small garden. At first, this was just my hobby during free time. But without noticing my mall garden slowly grew bigger and fuller.
It all began when my mother gave me one crate of spring onions seedlings when I went home to visit. She told me not to waste them, so I decide to plant them in an empty area near our farm house I though, why not try? At least the effort won’t be wasted, and I will also enjoy seeing them grow That is how my green onion garden started.
The first thing I did was prepare the soil. A good start always begins with healthy soil. I loosened the ground by digging it with a hoe, making sure it was soft enough for planting green onions loves soil that drains well but still keeps enough moisture.
Since we raise livestock at home, I made use of the chicken manure. This is a natural and organic fertilizer that helps plants grow strong. I mixed the manure with the soil a few weeks before planting so that it wouldn’t be too fresh, If you sue it fresh, it can be strong and might damage the seedlings.
For me, this is very important because I want my garden to stay organic safe, healthy and chemical-free.
When the soil was ready, I started planting. I made small rows on the ground with equal spaces so that the onions would not grow too close together. Then, I planted each seedling carefully.
Green onions are not hard to grow. Even if you don’t have much experiences, you can succeed, what they really need is enough sunlight, a little water and proper care.
Watering is simple but important. I water the spring onions early in the morning or late in the afternoon. I avoid watering them at noon when the sun is too hot because it might harm the plants. Green onions like moist soil but not too wet.
While waiting for them to grow. I always check for weeds and remove them. Weeds can complete with the plants for nutrients. I also make sure toa dd more compost or organic fertilizer if needed. Since green onions grow quickly, you will notice new shoots coming out after a few weeks. This is the most exciting part. After about 50 to 60 days, the green onions are ready to harvest. I usually pull them out gently or cut the leaves if I want them to grow again, Fresh green onions are always perfect for cooking, whether for soups, omelets or any dish that needs a strong onion flavor.
What started as simple hobby became something more productive. I realized that gardening does not only give you food but also joy and peace of mind. Every time I visit my small plot and see the green onions growing. I feel proud of the effort I put in.
